Default Where to stay in Macomb County when visiting?...

I noticed last Labor Day when I came into Detroit to visit family that there wasn't much in southern Macomb County when it came to hotels. We ended up staying at the Georgian Inn on Gratiot, which may have been one of the better bets as it has an Italian restaurant attached to the hotel. But the lay out is terrace-type units with outdoor exposures, not interior corridors, unless I missed it.

Until you get to the Little Mack and I-94 area there doesn't seem like much lodging between there and downtown. I can't think of any hotels around downtown Royal Oak.

After living in Detroit for decades in places like Corktown, I'm taking my first winter vacation in Detroit. I have a couple of places with friends or family to camp out, but I find those options at times to be a bit trying. In terms of lodging with somewhere to walk around, downtown seems about it.

Your options are rather limited in much of metro Detroit for Hotels... you stayed at Georgian Inn in Roseville... there are a cluster of about 6 hotels in the 13 Mile/Little Mack area of Roseville.

There's also the Shorecrest in SCS, but that's nothing special... ditto for the hotel along the I-94 Service Drive in Harper Woods.

There are also a few hotels along the Van Dyck corridor north of 12 Mile.

Outside of downtown... your best hotel options are probably in Troy. Southfield used to be a contender... but not anymore.

Interestingly enough there are no hotels in any of the Grosse Pointes.

You might want to try The Inn On Ferry Street... 4 large historic houses [[and 2 carriage houses) that have been converted to a Bed & Breakfast type of lodging... it is located 1 block north of the DIA... 1/2 block east of Woodward.

In Macomb County, most are the motor court style with parking at the door of the room.

There are a couple of larger hotels just northeast of the Hall Road-M53 intersection next to a Joes Crab Shack and a Dave & Busters.

The Sterling Inn [[Best Western) at 15 Mile and Van Dyke is a very nice hotel. Excellent restaurant attached [[Loon River Cafe).

As Gistok said, there are several hotels along Van Dyke between 12 Mile and 13 Mile, including a Courtyard Inn, Hawthorn Suites, Holiday Inn, LaQuinta, and Towneplace Suites [[on 13 Mile). At 13 1/2 Mile along Van Dyke, there is a Baymont Inn and Candlewood Inn/Suites and a Fairfield Inn.

    Hope this helps...

Second the Sterling Inn. I have stayed there several times when visiting. Extra bonus if you have kids since there is an indoor water park attached, as well as the restaurant.

Try the Hyatt in the area of Hall Road and M-53 [[commonly referred to as Van Dyke Hwy) that Hermod spoke of, it's very nice and has an indoor pool. Not to mention, it's a very lively area. As was pointed out, the Sterling Inn is very nice, especially that indoor water park.

The Sunnybrook out on 17 Mile just west of Van Dyke was a pretty nice place thirty years ago. It had a bowling alley right in the hotel. It is not a "motel" type place either. Lots of our people used to stay there when they went up to TACOM for meetings. I do not know how it has sttod the ravages of time though.

M-53 at M-59 there are a half dozen nice hotels/motels. La Quinta, Courtyard, the Marriot someone mentioned, Comfort Inn, Hollday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites and a couple miles north at 23 Mile is a Hampton Inn.

I stay in the Sterling Inn when I visit my cousin who lives by 15 Mile and Mound Rd. It has a nice interior courtyard that one can walk around in. My little ones love the water park.

Has anybody stayed at the Blue Water Inn in St. Clair Shores?

Sunnybrook is not so hot anymore, from what I hear.

You mean in St. Clair? I've eaten at the restaurant there [[Edison Inn, I think); it is a beautiful place at the foot of the bridge.

Blue Water Inn's restaurant is The River Crab, not the Thomas Edison Inn. Thomas Edison Inn is at the foot of the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron; Blue Water Inn and the River Crab are about 10 miles south along the river.

The Best Western Sterling Inn at 15 and Van Dyke is nice and priced well. There are a couple of national chain hotels along the Van Dyke corridor between 13 and 14 mile roads, as well. I've heard some good review of Townplace Suites on 13 mile and Van Dyke, too.

There is a good cluster of hotels at M-53 and M-59, as other posters have stated. I'd avoid that area, however, as traffic can be *terrible* out there, especially by Lakeside mall during rush hour.

I'm not surprised that the Sterling Inn at Van Dyke & 15 Mile is getting mentioned so often. They really do work hard on their reputation.

At M53/M59, I'd recommend the Comfort Inn [[northwest of the intersection) over the others. I've had plumbing, etc. problems at the others but never a problem at that Comfort Inn.

There is a nice hotel north of Joy on the west side of Gratiot. Its about a half mile north of the Clem. Lots to do there. The name of the hotel escapes me.

Do you have family in Macomb County? Not to be a total jerk [[I did live there for a long time), but outside of the water I don't find Macomb County to be much of a "destination." Ice fishing, perhaps?

Thanks for the tips, gang. All things considered, I might stay at the Greektown Casino Hotel where I have stayed before when visiting. It looks less than the Sterling Inn, plus it allows me to walk around one of my old 'hoods. I once lived in Lafayette Park and Corktown. Or as they would say in Detroit, I "stayed" in said neighborhoods.
