Default Improvement grants go to 3 Detroit grocery stores

    Associated Press / Associated Press

Detroit— Three grocers have received grants to help improve the stores' appearance, operations and marketing.

The Detroit Economic Growth Association says that funds were made to the Family Fair Food Center, Ye Olde Butcher Shoppe and Metro Foodland.

Family Fair Food Center will get up to $30,000 in matching funds for an exterior facade renovation, lighting and improved parking lot.

An additional $30,000 will reimburse the soon-to-open Ye Olde Butcher Shoppe up to 75 percent for the development of a marketing plan and construction documents.

Metro Foodland will be reimbursed up to $7,500 for launching three campaigns. An additional $22,500 will be set aside to match costs for store improvements.

The grants were made under the Green Grocer Project, launched last May with a Kresge Foundation grant.

One would wonder why a grant wasn't given to the soon to be open Lafayette Market
