    Default Abandonment

    This article lead me to look up some pictures of Chernobyl. It lead me to this photo stream, crazy how many of those interior shots are similar to the interiors of many buildings in Detroit.

    Also crazy how I just compared our city to one which suffered from a nuclear explosion 25 years ago.

    There was no nuclear explosion in Chernobyl. The town was contaminated by escaping radiation from the damaged nuclear reactor at the nearby power plant.

    Nitpicking, smartypants. Can't we all just have healthy conversation without constantly one-upping each other?

    Chernobyl is giving tours of its ruins. Detroit should do the same. It would probably help cut down on vandalism & trespassing if it were made more official.

    This from Wikipedia;

    On 26 April 1986, at 01:23 a.m. [[UTC+3), reactor 4 suffered a catastrophic power increase, leading to explosions in the core. This dispersed large quantities of radioactive fuel and core materials into the atmosphere[7] and ignited the combustible graphite moderator. The burning graphite moderator increased the emission of radioactive particles, carried by the smoke, as the reactor had not been contained by any kind of hard containment vessel [[unlike Western plants). The accident occurred during an experiment scheduled to test a potential safety emergency core cooling feature, which took place during the normal shutdown procedure.

    It would be an amazing place to photograph. Would be cool to visit someday, as current radiation levels do not pose risks to humans.
