    Default Partridge & Blackwell [[Crowley's)

Shorpy posted this photo today entitled "Pardridge & Blackwell". The actual name is Partridge & Blackwell. This store was on the Monroe block between Farmer and Randolph. It was sold to Crowley, Milner & Company in 1914, when Crowley's started in business. Later on, Crowley's built a second building on the block across Farmer and connected the two buildings with an overpass. I had the honor [[?) of serving on the Board of Directors of Crowleys from 1990 until its demise in early 1999.

I believe Pardridge & Blackwell is the correct name but over the years has been mispronounced as Partridge & Blackwell. Maybe there's another explanation, but I see Shorpy's photo is labeled the same, and on the right side of the photo a "Pardridge & Blackwell" sign:

MikeM--I agree with your read of the Shorpy photo, but here's the link from Wikipedia. We all know that the Wiki information can be suspect. I'll dig into this further.

Wikipedia, or where ever they got their information from, probably thought it was a misprint and it's been perpetuated ever since.

So is this shot of the corner of Farmer & Monroe, looking southeast?

    MikeM--
As usual, you are correct [[on the Pardridge name). I have edited the Wikipedia entry for Crowley's to correct this mistake. Do you [[or does anyone else out there) have a Sanborn map or maps for the 1905-1915 period that would show the evolution of this location?? Thanks.
