    Default The Shock Doctrine

In the case of post-Katrina New Orleans, W's admin. was worse than any looters.

All you conspiracy theorists should really jump on this. Klein presents a good case for the thesis that the corporate world has been creating and/or taking advantage of people's weaknesses following major catastrophes and that the U.S. gov. has been assisting them.

"...At the most chaotic juncture in Iraq’s civil war, a new law is unveiled that would allow Shell and BP to claim the country’s vast oil reserves…. Immediately following September 11, the Bush Administration quietly out-sources the running of the “War on Terror” to Halliburton and Blackwater…. After a tsunami wipes out the coasts of Southeast Asia, the pristine beaches are auctioned off to tourist resorts.... New Orleans’s residents, scattered from Hurricane Katrina, discover that their public housing, hospitals and schools will never be reopened…. These events are examples of “the shock doctrine”: using the public’s disorientation following massive collective shocks – wars, terrorist attacks, or natural disasters -- to achieve control by imposing economic shock therapy. Sometimes, when the first two shocks don’t succeed in wiping out resistance, a third shock is employed: the electrode in the prison cell or the Taser gun on the streets..."

From what I gather with a cursory read, she is right on the money with all of this.

    All of it.

I cannot trust anyone who fashions any form of argument against her.

Maybe Detroit is being observed as an example of self-destruction by pick-your-favorite-whipping-boy, i.e., African-Americans, unions, Democrats.

Bumping this old thread. I didn't read this book until last year. Essential reading, especially for those who think all the problems of the world begin and end with Trump. Here's a link to the film version:

Here's a more recent video by Naomi Klein herself about Trump:

Naomi Klein: How to Resist Trump's Shock Doctrine

What I find most revealing about Klein's Shock Doctrine is how little blowback it gets from the right despite the fact that it literally is a conspiracy theory. I think the evidence she presents is so compelling that no one feels capable of refuting it. It seems they'd rather hope it would just quietly vanish unanswered.

It won't vanish. Every future disaster exploited will only strengthen her argument.

After watching, I can't help but see how socialists love the premise of this talk. [[Just let the government take care of people.)
Free Markets have never been unregulated as the talks suggest.
The goal is not to let the government select the winners and losers but channel the income from the winners into the wealth of the nation with out seizing it.

Social networks that were in place and destroyed by economic disasters were largely private/religious entities until the government took over that function under the guise of fairness. This is what destroyed them. Now even education is government regulated as well as the capital that people use to achieve that education at the college level. You become an entity of the nation and indebted to it for everything.

But hey if you believe in a socialist paradise, one can always move.
