Default Pawn shop at Mich Ave/Wabsh action?

Anyone know what is going on here?

I was for sale for a while, now it's off the market and the second story windows which were previously boarded up are now uncovered and open.

    Demolition by neglect?

Slows owner is doing it. The pawn shop by Nemos is also getting some work done to it. I would have thought that between the crappy economy and the casinos pawn shops would be a booming business.

Rumors are, two new restaurants are in the works.

Just as an aside. In 1967 my buddy and I rented an apartment on Wabash and Dalzelle. We bought two cheap guitars and an amp at Federals and then a scant two weeks later our apartment was broken into and the guitars stolen. Two days after that we found one of the guitars in that pawn shop at Michigan and Wabash. Then later that year the riots. Ah memories.

One of these Pawn Shops is Sam's Loans, maybe since Sam's son Les Gold has started that show on TruTV, he decided to re-open! Yeah RIGHT

Acually, the owners of Slow's are building lofts above the Pawn Shop on Michigan and Wabash. The Pawn Shop on Michigan and Eighth will be an upscale Italian Resturant opening this summer. The apartments above it will be occupied next month. On Michigan and 14th, accross from Slow's a gourmet hamgburger resturant will be opened in March; the Mercury Burger Bar. Wow, is Corktown becoming the new resturant row?

Les Gold toured the building with his 2 kids when it was for sale. A "Hard Core Pawn" camera crew followed them through the building.

Yes it does look way better now, I did the Michigan ave drive from downtown west to look at the ruins of a couple relatives homes near Mich. and Livernois this past summer. I had not been back in that area since the mid 90's when I use to go over my grandmothers house a couple times a week. The whole stretch was looking a lot better and her house and my great Uncles down the street from her looked great! Both homes still standing, my great Uncles house looked better than it ever had and the surrounding homes also seemed good. Lived there for one summer in 1967 and will always consider that one of my best summers.

I couldn't find a recent picture of the entire block. But this shows the corner of 14th and the Mercury Burger Bar. You can see a hugh change. [[That's Slows accross the street, the red building).

Really? I heard they were reopening for Christmas, but I didn't realize they'd moved to Michigan and 14th. I figured they'd be on Park behind the Fox like last time.

What a huge difference! That pawn shop will look great if all the windows are opened back up. And.....that's a great comparison since they're practically the same shot!
Question.....why isn't that streetlight in front of the Mercury in the first shot? Had it fallen years ago and was replaced? Is it original or a replica?

Yeah, that's a pretty encouraging thread. I also notice when I check out Google Street View, that in spite of blighted areas, there are a lot of well-kept houses and streets and that even areas that are severely gap toothed have caring people that manage against incredible odds. If clusters of small business pop up in tandem in neighborhoods, it will definitely make life a lot more interesting.

Was that your photo wolverine? The post is gone. If it was.........could you re-post it? It was a great "then and now" comparison. If not, I understand.

It was, and for the record, I have no problems with people posting my photos here, I welcome it, but please do not download then upload it to the DYES servers with no mention where it came from.

At that point it becomes someone else's property with no credit or link to the OP. I apologize if it created confusion, but I have to draw the line somewhere

At the time I didn't think it was yours, but after I seen your post I thought about the quality of it and it made sense. No need for you to apologize.

Can someone please post a current pic of the pawn shop building during renovation. I always had dreams of restoring that building; living above and having my vintage music store below.

Like I wrote to you in my PM to you, under the Creative Commons Licensing [[which you set for the photo) I'm allowed to freely share, where I messed up was not giving you credit, and I apologize, however it added to the conversation and in my excitement about finding such a similar photograph I just saved and reposted.
