Default Feds propose graphic warning labels on cigarettes

Corpses, cancer patients and diseased lungs are among the images the federal government plans for larger, graphic warning labels that would take up half of each pack of cigarettes sold in the United States.

Whether smokers addicted to nicotine will see them as a reason to quit remains a question....

...The FDA is proposing 36 labels for public comment.
Some of the labels include a man with a tracheotomy smoking a cigarette, a cartoon of a mother blowing smoke in her baby's face, rotting and diseased teeth and gums, as well as cigarettes being flushed down the toilet to signify quitting.

What they are going to graphically show is pretty lame stuff... compared to what Canada shows on its Cigarette packs... cancerous lungs and other vile diseased body organs... which makes a mom blowing cigarette smoke in her baby's face seem rather tame...

Canadian DetroitYES forumers... show us what images they put on your cigarette packs....

I propose generic labels only, nothing but the brand name in plain letters over the graphic images.

Add a Scratch n' Sniff type panel that stinks of rotting flesh when you touch the package.

Tabacco companies have to selling cancer sticks to everyone since the 15th Century. They will continue to sell these poisons to anyone who wants it through ther peers.

This is an ethical statement :"SMOKING OR CHEWING TOBACCO CAUSES CANCER!" There is no debate, cross examination or rebuttal about it.

    WORD FROM THE STREET PROPHET

Thank you for not smoking for Neda's sake.

We've all known smoking can kill you for decades now and it doesn't phase some people. I don't think this will have much of an effect.

    How dumb.

Why don't they require pictures of fat slobs on all fast food bags, drunk losers on alcohol bottles, etc.?

Some determined to smoke will do so no matter what's on the pack/ or the increasing price it seems. Been there, done that...

But that which is normally hidden from view [[diseased rotting lungs etc) is a deterrent somewhat, especially to those who never picked up the habit in the first place. So imagery does have some impact. That which is seen in less deniable.

Meanwhile the federal government is still handing out some tobacco subsidies. Although the larger Tobacco Farm Stabilization Program has ended, the government still buys up quotas. What's wrong with that picture? Tobacco Subsidies in the United States totaled $203 million in 2009
    States Receiving tobacco subsidies, 2009

Not related but China produces 39.6% of the world's tobacco while the US produces 4.6%. In Mexican families earning the lowest 20% of income, 11% of family income is spent on tobacco.

You know they won't ban them, the government is addicted to cigarette taxes like an addict.
They like to ban all sorts of things that are far less harmless.

Thank you for saving me some typing.

I don't much appreciate the government wanting to show me the hard facts of smoking cigarettes [[I don't smoke them) while so jealously hiding the goddam shameless bullshit that they carry off, behind our backs, every damned day.
If they want to treat us as though we are 6-year-old kids, maybe we should pay the same taxes as does a six-year-old kid.
The government goddam well loves the taxes collected from cigarette smokers, and the tobacco growers are a huge lobbying group.
What they really hope is that us baby-boomers will engage in a multiplicity of activities which will kill us off before it's time to tell us that the Social Security system, into which we have paid many billions of dollars, will not be able to afford to give us a fucking dime.
