Default Covered up GM logo on the RenCen??

I went to Mass at Old St. Mary's on Thursday during the day and noticed that the big blue logo on the hotel tower of the RenCen was covered over in black plastic. Anyone know what that was all about? I was thinking it was maintenance or something, but in all the years I used to work down there in the towers I do not recall seeing them do that.

    Any ideas?

I believe they are turning the sign into an LED-lighted sign. It shall be visible at night. Light up the sky Detroit!

That would be a very easy step with an LED screen...

Speaking of film, do they still have the theater at the Ren Cen?

Its a shame that building is such nightmare to navigate once inside. It seems the problem all lies in the fact that its circular. I would think some renovations on the first few floors could turn it into something not so confusing, by adding some right angles. My first grade school was called the Round School because it was shaped like a donut, same basic floor design as the Ren Cen, it was just as confusing being a first grader and trying to find my to the principals office the first few times. I believe it was built pre-Ren Cen. You would think architects would have learned after the first few thousand years of building that corners give ppl a sense of where they are once inside. Did all that make sense??

[[Could be the last day you work in that building. )

    LED rings too

the tweaking consists of a color-changing LED ring circling the top of each tower. We dropped our pita when he told us how much these rings will cost: $24 million. Yep, $24 million clams for three color-changing LED rings.

It would also be a great time to introduce a new/tweaked logo, just in time for an IPO, perchance?

Why not just take the damn thing down. Corporations nowadays just love plastering their names all over things they own or sponsor.
It's not that bad but the buildings are works of art, not billboards.

This building? Reminds me of a glass covered concrete bunker used for waiting out the a-bomb!

The Hyatt O'Hare reminds me of its long lost square brother.

I do enjoy looking at your skyline. We're pretty lucky in Windsor to be able to see such a fantastic skyline whenever we please. How nice does Windsors "skyline" look from over there? I know it's not impressive or anything....but does it at least look like a nice place at night?

Default Lost In Poorly Designed Buildings

They do still have a movie theater in the Renaissance Center.

That probably contributes to the problem, but it might have more to do with a general lack of points of reference. A similar problem occurs in the Empire State Plaza, in New York State. A discussion comparing the two can be found here.

Well....that looks pretty nice! Thanks DD! Where is this taken from? I'm seeing the Canada building way over on the left [[little beige building to the left of the casino) when it's a few blocks up Ouellette.

Is that sunrise or just that damn Caesars sign glowing on everything? LOL

OK, maybe I'm too dense to suss the joke. Are there three towers? No. Are there seven rings? No? HALP!

Hi there, yes, they still have the theater and they even offer date night, dinner and a movie! Very nice. Also, GM has done a nice job of renovating and trying to make the towers more user-friendly so they now have a number/color coding system so its much easier to navigate. They even offer tours during which you can go "behind the scenes" to learn about the construction, trivia, trip up to Coach Insignia for the view, and its FREE! It is fascinating....check it out! I have stayed at the hotel so many times I can't count and I think if each trip there as an incredible and lovely adventure. I never get tired of it and the sound of the people mover going by just lulls me to sleep. Don't miss the awesome Volt Lounge in the Marriott, they even have nice patio outdoor seating in summer but great place to hang out.

I'm friends with a few folk who are in the know on this, but they are as tight-lipped as can be...as IF it were a military Top Secret national security item!

It MUST be that GM is significantly changing their identity with this IPO, and there may be some SEC and other Non-Disclosures involved.

One seemed genuinely surprised that the rings were leaked in the News...but I still couldn't pry any additional information out of them.

    Cheers

    Jimaz,

There are seven towers in total...a main tall one surrounded by 4 middle-sized...then two additional matched towers to the east which were added later to originally house ANR, then later EDS when GM took over the complex.

My guess is they will band the main five towers with 3 rings of primary colors that can be combined to make whatever display they wish...but that is a pure guess. I couldn't find a quickie source for Sodium Pentathol, and was unwilling to share any other 'loosening agents' I had at my disposal tonight.

I could tell those lips weren't budging...and it is MADDENING for me to know people who can actually keep secrets! LOL

    Cheers
