    Default Carls Chop House

Anyone have any information on this place? They have been working on on and off. This morning they put up a fence around it. I think they are getting ready to tear it down.

Thank goodness. That place was really starting to make the city look blighted.

Perhaps they are planning to tear it down. I will say I had the best steak dinner ever there when I graduated from college. My parents were so proud and enjoyed their dinner.

The fence has been up for a few months now, ever since the article about it in the Detroit News

Great place. Was one of my parents and grandparents' favorites, and we went there many times over the years. It's a shame that it closed, and an even bigger shame that it was left open to be stripped out like that. There's nothing else particularly distinguished about the building though, apart from its history. It should probably be torn down now.

The Fence in the front off Grand River was put up today I watched them while at work!

Those were probably just scrappers stealing the fence.

It was some fence company from Southgate that's what their red F-150 said

I have fond memoeries of Carls Chop House, having gone there before the Cass Tech Prom in 1975.Just like everything else that is down there and open to trespassers and vandals/scavengers it is time to tear it down. The writing on the wall for CCH was when the Casino opened across the street from it.I'm sure there are others who feel like there is someone who could save CCH,but it doesn't seem economically feasible. The days of places like CCH,London Chop House,Ponchartrain Wine Cellars are over and only the memories remain....

Bye, bye. Casino killed it. Demo starts soon. Could have at least thrown em a bone with comps. That's the problem with the two all inclusive casinos. They should have all been required to be around the people mover and have street entry businesses. Greektown is the only one I will ever go to.

Actually the casino didn't kill it. It held on by the skin of its teeth waiting for the casino, hoping that would bring back the business. Alas, it was not to be, but it was struggling for a few years before the casino was located there.

Sad.....my parents and I patronized Carls for decades. Dinner, parties, anniversarys, et. al

Sad. I loved that place, even in it's latter couple of years.

Unfortunately the Casino did kill it. If the casino was built in a way that had an actual entrance onto Grand River instead of a faux entrance, it would have got more traffic. Big developers are not stupid, and are very greedy. Hence all parking and pedestrian movements are made behind the casino, leaving the Grand River side void of pedestrian activity. It would make zero sense for people to get in thier cars, drive across the street, then pay a Valet to park thier car so folks just went to the local Applebees by their home or splurged at the MCC buffet.

It was dead before the casino opened; quality and service fell off, and the place smelled like mildew.

I went there NYE 2006,2007 and 2008. Great meal, great atmosphere, great service. My fiance' and I were saddened when they closed.

Ate there in about 04 and the prime rib was nothing special and the interior decor hailed from the "Cordoba" era. Anyway I still have their business card in my toolbox at work

This is bullshit! Why tear down a perfectly fine building that was once Carl's Chop House? They should be more focused on other blighted buildings in the area, such as Eddystone and Harbor Light! I don't understand, just like when the City tore down Amelia Earhart Elementary after it closed this past year. They still leave piece of shit half-burned out Emma Thomas Elementary School and stripped-out gutted Greenfield Park Elementary still standing?

FTA:"That said, I can say that we do applaud any and all efforts to make Detroit a more beautiful and safe place for all."
... one parking lot at a time.

Didn't anyone think about saving the sign?

They used to give you one huge hunk of prime rib in that place.

I hope someone saved that walnut paneling. Walnut is VERY expensive. I just paid over $400 for about ten boards to build a mantle on my fireplace.

The building is almost completely gone! Sad!!
