That's the way to do it, bring em in, sit them down to talk around the possibility of living in downtown again. Developers need to make investment attractive and the value for money is pretty high right now for folks who have good income, downtown life is accessible. What needs to be done to keep these people coming and then staying, is provide proximity in shopping and more offer in restaurants. The entertainment and sports offer is not a problem. I think young professionals who arent committing yet to a purchase are probably less afraid of coming to an open ended event like that rather than a spiel about one particular condo project, this breaks the ice and provides networking opportunities as well.

Sheryl from Beverly Hills can make the first step and come on down.
Unfortunately, Detroit is full of young undereducated, poor and jobless
    talent.
All the cheer leading and cocktail parties don't mean bunk unless there
is follow up and real opportunities provided.

Nah, Sheryl can go back to Beverly Hills and feel really smug that she offered insight into saving Detroit without having to actually do anything.

Set up a Chinese style sweat shop to make cheap items to ship over seas and you will be able to employ them.

Young, fresh talent will create fresh jobs if the powers-that-be in this region don't push them out.
