Default Our Greenest School - David Suzuki School

One of the advantages of living in our international border city has been the availability of Canadian media for us on the American side and CBC in particular. Over the years this has given us David Suzuki’s amazing “The Nature of Things” documentary show. Anybody else watched it?

Canada’s greenest school has recently opened in Windsor and was appropriately name after Mr. Suzuki, well known for his environmentalism, who was in town today for the official opening. I also learned that he lived part of his younger life in the area. So we get to call him one of ours.

Great human being, great school and great story.

I'm hoping that they threw in some ground loop geothermal coils for heating and cooling the place, otherwise it's all just for show. In this climate that is a must have if you want green, your fossil fuel heating costs, as well as electrical cooling, should be minimized as much as possible.

LEED is really easy to achieve in new construction, if you hire the right person to manage your processes. The standard really needs to be significantly toughened to make it actually MEAN something.

That being said, Ferndale's library just underwent a redo, with geothermal included as a heating system.

The greenest building is the one that's already built. Just throwing that out there....

I remember watching it when he first took it over in 1979. Great show! He has a gift for making science interesting.

No kidding. Wikipedia says he spent his early years in a Canadian internment camp during WWII and was later forced to move east of the Rockies. Learn something new every day.
