Default Michael Imperioli doesn't like Detroit

I miss walking the streets and just watching the flow of life in New York. The city is unending and inexhaustible. I miss coming into contact with so many people. You don't have that same experience in Detroit. I haven't found many neighborhoods out here where you want to walk around and explore.

The truth? As in the Detroit area is overly car dependent and that makes it unattractive to those outside Detroit's car cult? What a revelation... I don't think anyone has EVER said that before...

So what if it's been said before? It IS the truth. If you're used to being in a place like NYC, Detroit has got to seem bleak and lifeless.

And you know what? That kind of contrast isn't going to change within any of our lifetimes. Reality is sometimes cruel.

It is a legitimate criticism, but it isn't like there are more than a handful of US cities where you really have street life vaguely approximating NYC.

Certainly it is something for the city to aspire to.

Kind of nice to hear as opposed to the other actors giving the politically correct answer and acting as if this area is some sort of new found utopia.

In their defense they might not feel the need to give these overly gushy responses if some of the media people in this town didn't keep hounding them with these questions and acting like insecure 16 year olds looking for an ego massage.

His comments are in response to NYkers freaking out that he was moving to Detroit, you know. They did not at all like the idea that one of their own might opt for Detroit instead [[he never said he was moving permanently and he's never said he doesn't like Detroit). He has also said he's been through many of the neighborhoods here despite being warned not to go into them.

It is funny the way people are so concerned about whether the cool kids like us.

On the other hand, it is useful to hear opinions from people who have a different perspective.

Where does he say he doesn't like Detroit?

Boy, you sure do like to jump on anyone who would dare criticize someone for criticizing Detroit. FYI, my comment wasn't directed towards Imperioli's statement...

True fact about Michael Imperioli: He did not possess a driver license until he was cast as Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos.

Imperioli is a New Yorker. They don't need to drive so they are on the subways and on the street. You can say the same for Chicago. When people come to Metro Detroit from out of state they are in for a cultural shock because Detroit and its suburbs were built to isolate rather than connect and share. Mr. Imperioli is stating a fact that we already know and to say that he doesn't like Detroit is hyperbole 1-8-7.

Just tired of the Polyanna rah-rah crap. Realistic, guarded optimism is fine, but I see little of that on this forum.

His bio says he's from Mount Vernon. That's not exactly a car independent society. It's not Detroit-style dependent, but there definitely ain't no subway running through that town.

Big deal, the guy is homesick. If most people were sent to NY for several months they'd probably miss their hometown, so why shouldn't he miss his?

He's answering anxious questions about whether he's "leaving New York" ...so of course it sounds defensive.
    Relax.
This also doesn't mean that NY is the garden spot of the universe where we all aspire to live.

Sorry, not feeling your comment. The dude didn't drive until The Sorpranos aired on HBO.

My opinion of the guy just jumped up 50%. At least he's not telling lies about Detroit.

You sure can't mistake Midtown for Manhattan, that's for sure.

It doesn't matter where he was born, the point of his comment was that he like to walk and feel the city. The man lives in New York City now and he can't feel that same life in Detroit.

You see, facts are always true. That's what makes them facts. Can you feel me now?

You cant compare Detroit to NYC. But give him time and he will come to appreciate Detroit, it will grow on him.
