    Default Today's F P front page

Headline: CONTROVERSIAL CALL HAS LIONS FANS ASKING
WHAT THE ...? Story takes up two-third's of front page for a less than mediocre team on the first frickin' game of the season. Maybe they should rename the Free Press the "Detroit Sports Free Press"

I guess you'll see any NFL city's newspapers loaded with football on page one today. Hey, it sells papers. The Las Vegas Review-Journal was loaded with NFL stories today, mainly about the great turnout in the sports books and the betting line stories. I was in a LV casino yesterday, wanted to put in a futures bet on the Lions, but the line was so long I didn't do it. Will get it down later this week.

The Seahawks won. You think it wouldn't have made the front page of the Seattle Times? If that call had happened against Seattle, the Times would have had it on the front page of every section including classifieds and "Lifestyle", and the PI would have editorialized against it.

But the Lions have a bigger proplen than the call if Stafford's going to be out 4 to 6 weeks.

What's interesting is how often sports stories are 8 out of 10 of the "most popular" articles, although as I type this they're only 6.

Its the continued dumbing down of the country. Sports are the only thing this city has left, the only thing our local McPapers print is AP reprints any more

I don't have a problem with it leading the front page. So it was controversial call against our Lions and it was so blatantly obvious the call was blown. Is this any less news than the Armando Galarraga blown perfect game a few months back? And yet that was a news item that transcended over to even non-sports fans. There are plenty of front page news articles that are worthy of big splashy headlines- the Lions just happen to make this one. Obviously the people who complain about it aren't sports fans nor do they understand the implications it has on the long suffering Lions fan base.

Some of us weren't exactly riveted to the Kwame debacle a few months back but we were served up headlines nearly every day about it. No big deal there either. It was news and maybe it wasn't the news I wanted to read immediately but it was news nevertheless. Don't like what the big headline is about- then I suggest you don't pick up the paper, read it online or just skim to the section you want to read. Some editor has got to make the choice on what to put there- so you disagree with them. Move on.

What else would you put on the front page that day to sell newspapers?
They have to make a buck too.
