Really, that's all you can come up with? Rough neighborhood?

I remember about 15 years ago on the far east side when a Kentucky Fried Chicken employee was killed on East Warren [[east of Cadieux). They installed bullet proof glass soon thereafter, but kept the restaurant open, where it's still doing great business.

I know that many Detroiters are insulted by the glass barriers at many locations [[such as party stores). But if it's the price of the business owner to staying in business [[and stay alive)... then I guess it's the price that has to be paid.... reluctantly.

After all it's all the rage for banks [[in the burbs as well).

An auto repair shop wouldn't lend itself to bullet proof glass like a bank or fast food place.

A friend of mine has a furniture store on the East side. He wears a kevlar vest and carries a Smith and Wesson 9mm. Can't use bullet proof glass there either, you have to be able to interact with customers.

Indeed it's rough in parts of that area. Independent small shops have it bad to try to make a go of it. Race has little to do with it. Criminals are robbing shops owned by blacks, white or otherwise. I have a mechanic friend struggling to keep a shop open nearby. He has double locks, chains, razor wire, alarm, the works... These killers are still loose seeking their next 'mark'...

Exactly, an 'auto shop' is not a pass an item thru-the-chute from the other side of the glass business.

Crazy to have to wear a kevlar vest to work... but hey that's the lay of the land in some areas. More and more shop keepers are opting to be armed in order to live if they are doing business in the city.

I say hats off to all these small mechanic shops trying to strive in the city. I own used cars and sometimes frequent their establishments over the dealer or franchise shops.

There is something seriously wrong here. I know, it is obvious, but Detroit isn't just a big American city with big American city crime problems, it is a bloodbath and a free-for-all here.

There is a serious problem with the culture here. There are comparably poor and destitute cities around the world that do not have this ultra-violence and ultra-destructive lawlessness. I have been to poor parts of Eastern Europe where people respect each other, there is little crime, and people sweep their porches. If the 2nd world can do it, then fuck you Detroit, you can do it too. No excuses.

We have more murders in the city per year than many countries have in an entire year.

Detroiters obviously watched too many "clockwork orange" cartoons when they grew up

I suppose as a Detroiter, I should be frustrated that people are dying here in Detroit and I suppose I could say that death circles the globe. Murder happens in every city that has the poor in large numbers and Detroit is no different. To say that Detroit has more murders than many countries is hyperbole. You said you been to poor parts of Eastern Europe and you say people respect each other but let me ask you if they live under our system? When you say Eastern Europe, you are referring to the satellite nations of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republic right? The enemy was not the people but the Communist system and its puppets and in some places the enemy is still the government.
