St. Cecilia Elementary School in Detroit will soon be closed due to a lack of students. When did St. Cecilia High School close? Does anyone have any memories of attending the high school there or going to basketball games at the St. Cecilia gym?

Growing up in the 50's & 60's at St. Brigids, we played St. Cecilia in the CYO Sports League. They were in our [[neighborhood )division along with St. Lukes, St Francis DeSales, St. Gregory, Epiphany, St. Benedict, St Andrews

Detroit --One of the oldest surviving Catholic grade schools in the city is closing its doors, Archdiocese of Detroit officials have announced.

St. Cecilia Elementary School, on Burlingame Street near Livernois and Grand River, will not open for the 2010-11 school year because of "insufficient enrollment," church officials announced.

"It is with great sadness that we have come to the conclusion that St. Cecilia School would have to close," the Rev. Theodore Parker, who heads the St. Cecilia Catholic Church.

"Unfortunately, for the upcoming school year, we were not able to get the students."
St. Cecilia, which included grades preschool through eight, opened Aug. 31, 1925, with an enrollment of 530. In the past few years the school was struggling to survive, said church officials.

The school's enrollment has declined significantly over the last two years in the midst of a worsening local economy. Less than 45 students were enrolled for the 2010-11 school year. Last year St. Cecilia Elementary had 83 students enrolled, down from 157 for the 2008-09 school year.

Archdiocese of Detroit officials will work with parents to find alternative Catholic schools to send their children to as a result of the school's closure.

The school's popular Ceciliaville athletic and youth center will remain open, church officials said.

I saw quite a few NBA all star games there in the 70's and 80's during the Ceciliavlle summer league when Sam Washington ran that program. Great pick games!
