Default Visiting U of Toronto Planning Students Need Your Advice!

    Hi everyone,

I'm part of a team of U of T students organizing a field trip to Detroit [[August 30th to September 2nd) for our second year Masters of Science in Planning class. Around twenty-five of us will be coming from Toronto to learn from people intent on changing Detroit for the better.

An amazing PhD student, who is very familiar with Detroit through both on the ground experience and academic research, has set an itinerary for the learning components of the trip; others are taking care of travel and accomodation arrangements. What I need to figure out is how to spend our evenings...

How would you suggest a group of twenty or so mostly twenty something year olds spend the evenings in and/or around Detroit
for the nights of Monday August 30th, Tuesday the 31st and Wednesday September 1st?

I have some good preliminary ideas from browsing this forum... Barbeque night at Belle Isle [[any night), Byte This! Poetry and Slam Series at Cliff Bells [[Monday) and maybe a pub night at Park Bar [[any night?)... but I'd love to hear more!

    Here are a few perameters:
    1) We have vehicles, but would prefer to stay in or within a few miles of the core
    2) We value local flavor, culture and feel
    3) Not a lot of money to spend

    Fire away!

    Thanks in advance!

August 31 at 8 pm, Poetry Slam at Cliff Bell's:
Poetry Slam Incorporated present the ByteThis! Poetry & Slam series every Monday from 8PM to 12AM at Cliff Bell's. The evening includes an open mic segment and newcomers are encouraged to participate. Admission is a piddly $5.

Eastern Market, Mexican Town, DIA/Charles Wright Museums, Motown.

If you can push it back a couple of months you can tie in with the State Planning Convention that will be in town. http://www.planningmi.org/conference.asp

pretty sure Mondays at Mexicantown are Canadian money at par as well. Good eatin'
I suppose if you feel like it you can swing back to Windsor for some eating and drinking....but weekdays are pretty sucky here. I'd just stay in Detroit.... Infinitly more to offer. I'm not trying to scoop up buisness from the D....it's just one of the benifits of having these two great cities next to eachother.

Avoid Royal Oak, Birmingham and Grosse Pointe woods due to the high crime.

You should reschedule your trip to Sept. 11 and come to Dally in the Alley.

Um, that ^ amounts to a 5% tax for them. As of today it takes a dollar and a nickel to buy a loonie.

Welcome to our Detroit - Windsor international metropolis. Motorcity Brewing and Cass Cafe [in cultural center area] are two arty pubs. You could do a crawl between the two. The former makes its own outstanding brew. Try the nut brown. I think Cass Cafe has one buck beer nights.
