A tornado was reported to be on the ground somewhere between Milan and Maybee. When I was looking out to see what was going on, it was raining so hard I could not even see my backyard from inside! The downriver communites and northern Monroe County communities sounded their sirens several times for a few minutes, including at 10:20 PM.

Seems like the sirens have gone off more times in the past week than they did all last summer.

Fox 2 news put what they said was a trained weather spotter on the air live last night. This guy didn't sound like he was trained in anything, except maybe beer pong. He described seeing a funnel cloud descending in the Merrimen I-94 area. They asked him where he was and he said Wick and Vreeland. Well Vreeland is nowhere near Wick Rd. Then he says he sees the tornado on the ground and dirt flying and all kinds of damage. Fox 2 got punked big time.

Maybe [[or Maybee) the scrupulous banks won't have to keep hiring looters to create brownfields on which to build pre-suburbanesque housing.

I'll never convince my friends in Oklahoma of that one-on the other hand I was passing thru Wichita when a tornadic storm was doing the same, the local news covered it like they do the earthquakes out here; a dozen reporters & "experts" spewing hearsay & speculation to a frightened & rattled populace

Yes, they asked him if there was damage near the airport from the funnel cloud, and he said "massive".

We've had two tornado sirens this year [[two in two days, nonetheless). When I was younger we had two tornadoes on the exact day and month two years apart. Neither killed anybody.

I live in Missouri, though. It's not as bad as Oklahoma, but they're pretty common here.

I'm still pretty peeved about this. I'm about 5 miles directly east of the airport so naturally we were concerned. Fox 2 weatherman identified the guy on the phone as a trained weather spotter, so you assume the guy is legit. How can they put someone on the air like that without verifiying who he says he is, especially during a severe weather alert report.

Part of the problem is that the 2 hours of training by the NWS does not necessarily make you a " trained " weather spotter. They teach you the basics, but it takes a lot of experience to accurately report a tornado especially at night. Of course everybody would know a mile wide tornado if they see it.

To everyone living in that county stay safe! Some communites are activating their sirens. Watching on Fox 2 right now. Anybody watching it too?

you got one for wayne now too. better batten down the hatches here in Windsor as well!
Now it's time to watch the blue green flashes of poor old SW Detroit. Everytime I'm at work here in the west end,and there's any kind of storm, that's all I can see over there and feel so bad for the people living in 100 year old homes with no siding and holes in the roof.

Are you in Wayne or Oakland counties? Because both have tornado warnings.

I'm in Southern Macomb, but I had 97.1 on and they said a tornado warning to include "Royal Oak, Southfield, etc.." and the fair is at approx. 6 / Gratiot.

The warning is over at 3:15...I'll just go then.

They do it all the time. In such a rush to be the first news outlet with the "scoop".
Capt. Janks has done this to I don't know HOW many news services.

There have been more tornadoes and warnings in Metro Detroit so far this summer than the entire summer in 2009. That's due to the way storms have swept the region, forecasters say.
"We've had a funnel boundary that's been nearly stationary from Iowa across Chicago and southern Michigan. This has allowed storms to develop," meteorologist Steve Considine said.
"We've had a lot of unstable air, heat and humidity. Those ingredients have helped to fuel the amount of storms."

Are we done yet? I hope so.
