Default Are You Going to The Red Bull Air Races?

Just curious as to who is going to go and pay to watch the air races this weekend?
Or will you be one of the others who bitches about nothing happening in this area while not paying for attending such events?

Hopefully the weather co-operates because this year looks bigger and better than last year's event.

Those noisy planes spewing exhaust all over the riverfront. And isn't this a Canadian event. Hey, know any good spots I can see it for free.

if you go, stay away from I-75 and 9 mile -- down to one lane each direction all weekend

Good one Downriviera. Yes it is a Canadian event but tickets are available on the Detroit side as well. Or maybe a big curtain should be drawn across the waterfront??

I am planning to come over, still figuring out which day. For those of you who haven't done so, I can ensure you that this is a spectacular vista with the buzzing planes and the backdrop of the skyline. Windsor does a great job on the hospitality side too. Drinks and eats are inexpensive even with the soaring looney. Pack some folding chairs and get there early to grab some seats right by the river railing.

    Where to watch for free?

I went a couple of years ago and sat on the edge of Belle Isle. Had a nice barbeque out there and while you can't watch the planes very well as they go through the course the pilots did circle directly over us while waiting for their turn. After they did their race they would fly back towards Belle Isle and some of the pilots would do tricks as they left the course.

Last year we watched it from the Marriott, so naturally, the prices were raised for this year. Screw that, I booked a suite at Casino Windsor for the weekend. Better view and better pricing.

I'm disappointed my fellow Detroiter's fail to take an interest in this international event.

What, not enough arrogant jack-asses like Kobe as pilots?

Disappointed why? Can't everybody just be interested in the things in which they are interested? Am I, somehow, less of a Detroiter because I could not possibly care less about the Red Bull Air Races?
Perhaps you would be happier if we all headed on down for the event. Parking would be fun!!

Default Almost in the Detroit River

    Hello:

    You want interesting?

Then go to www.redbullairrace.com and find the 2 minute video showing Australian pilot Matt Hall nearly putting his plane into the river. Video shows several different angles - all with suburb clarity. If this won't draw a paying crowd next year, then I don't know what will.

We're interested. In fact, the first year on the river, Detroit was the host. And a few hundred thousand people packed Hart Plaza and the rest of the riverfront area in support. Unfortunately, in the following year, then Mayor Cockrel, in his infinite wisdom, decided to cancel the event. Maybe one of the planes should have been painted up as the Star Trek Enterprise for the self-proclaimed geek. But in any event, the City of Windsor stepped up and took over the event. The interest is, and was, there. It's the leadership that was lacking.

    That doesn't sound very sustainable.

Unfortunately I missed the race on Sunday as I had to go clean up fallen trees on my in-laws property, crushed cars, fences and sheds made for a long day.

Saturday was a perfect day though!

I'm very glad the races went on even though they took out gate 13. Sorry I missed you Lowell. Perhaps next time?

Whoa! I never thought of that before, but it's obviously the case, and there's the picture to prove it. That would also apply to, say, the fireworks, right?
