Bert became part of Barry Harris' inner circle in the early 1950's, and was a 'first call' drummer in Detroit for over fifty years.
Myrick was part of the largely forgotten Bohanon-Fields Quintet, which flourished in the mid-60's, and included the brilliant and highly eccentric tenor saxophonist Ronnie Fields. Bert was a solid timekeeper who didn't rush and preferred to keep the rhythm going rather than solo.
He was also a kind and gentle man, always stylishly dressed - he owned a light purple suit which matched his light purple Buick - he dug the ride 'cause his kit fit in the trunk. Bert was given to smooth cashmere topcoats with matching Fedoras; he was a hipster. His work as a member of the Terry Pollard Trio was exemplary - Pollard loved having him in her band.
In later years, Bert was part of Kenny Cox' trios. Cox, who was notoriously picky about drummers, always felt comfortable with Myrick in the section - "I never had to worry about the rhythm with Bert..."
That was Bert - classy guy who played solid drums and made a mean Chocolate cake. RIP, my man.
