Default Documents left in abandoned buildings

I've been browsing pictures of some closed buildings in Detroit [[a couple of schools and the Highland Park Police Headquarters). You see all kinds of documents lying around, like photos, ID cards, probably Social Security numbers. Don't the owners of these buildings have some responsibility to discard this info? It seems dangerous to be leaving personal information lying around. Obviously this happens in a lot of cities, but I've noticed it in a few places in Detroit. I'm just wondering if the owners of these buildings could get in trouble for leaving this info where many people can get to it.

    Thanks.

Yes, you can get in trouble. I don't remember where, but a hospital closed and the owner got in trouble for taking all the medical records in the hospital, putting them in a big pile and burning them because it was too expensive to pay for a professional shredding service.

I think it's the most recent owner of the old North Detroit General Hospital that you're remembering.
