    Default Rivertown from above

Here are a few of my shots of Rivertown from above. The neighborhood has so much potential. As you can see they just recently starting repaving some of the streets.

Thanks for sharing. That area always fascinated me: the isolation, the brick buildings and roads/alleyways, the views of the river. I hope they turn a lot of it into parkland. [[I've forgotten what the specific plans were for that area as far as connecting the Riverwalk with the Dequinder Cut.)

I'm sure glad all that stuff was wiped away for the casino. Oh, wait ...

Are those railbeds in the street?

Biking through the area last year by Dequindre cut you can see all the railbeds. This area was heavy with industry in the beginning of the 20th century.

What I would like to see is a mix use of parkland and some sort of high-density tourist area like Greektown. Unfortunately Detroit as a whole has nothing that out of town tourists can go to. I'm thinking of something along the lines of Navy Pier in Chicago or Pier 39 in San Francisco. Unfortunately the question is how much toxic waste will need to be cleaned up. IE-The Uniroyal site which has been vacant for close to 30 years.

What's that dump truck doing? Is it part of the road repaving project, or something else?

Into the 80s, trains still ran on those rails.

Looks like he dumped a fresh load of milled asphalt.

I thought so. I remembered one night around 1990, the only time I ever went to that Wherehouse club, there were rails right down the street, which amazed me.

Or more accurately, the EDC is continuing the wholesale reconstruction of subsurface and above grade infrastructure [[water, storm, sanitary, private and public untilities, sidewalks, lighting etc) that they began four years ago and have been progressing on as part of the adopted EDC plan for the East Riverfront.

I hope they turn a lot of it into parkland.
Apparently someone has been living in a cave for the last six years.

GTW still ran freight cars down to the LaFarge Cement silo at the end of the Dequindre cut into the mid 90s I believe. Passenger rail ended when SEMTA service stopped in 1983. If you want to see rails still in the street, go check out Wight Street in the neighborhood of the coast guard station....some old trackage is still in the pavement and bricks....switches too.
