    Default Mr. FoFo's Deli

A Facebook discussion turned to Mr. FoFo's and their website says they are closed. Anybody know what's up?

I am in Chicago and my wife is from here. She said the same thing. My kids are 4 and 5 and they sing the song all the time.

When you drive by the place it always looked closed even when it was open.

Yeah, I used to go sometimes when it was in it's hey day, where the whole strip was going with a fish fry place on the end and the deli on the other and the giant cakes and the main store had this giant aquarium. Now, you drive by and it non of that and the area has deteriorated a great deal..... to bad.

Corned beef sandwiches and chunks of chocolate cake the size of yer head! Good eatings!

That place has been shut down for quite some time now.

Sad. I always liked Mr. Fofo's Good food and nice people in a part of the city that needed all the activity it could get. Had to stop going though when my sister had a personal falling-out with one of the family's members.

He always bought ad space from the Electrifyin' Mojo.

"Thank you Detroit. Together, we are doing it."

Is it only FoFo's that's closed, or also Peaches & Greens? Is the whole Central Detroit Christian project kaput?

Mr FoFo's was quite the place in it's days. As described on this thread, the portions were gigantic and the food very good. It was a shining beacon along that stretch of street. I had an employee who worked there also, so we had customers back and forth. This was back in the mid-80's. I haven't been in about 10 years. I'd love to see it thriving, but it's certainly way out of my way.

No, I think Peaches & Greens is open, though its on a rough strip... I go there sometimes, their garden plot is right next door. It is a really nice looking place with nice big picture windows that you rarely see in that area. I hope they succeed and I plan to patronized them more...

Zacha, thanks for that lead. I haven't been in the neighborhood for quite a few years. I'll check it out.

Mr. FoFo's had the best corned beef in the city.
As mentioned, the portions were huge. It was in a ruff area but the sandwiches, macaroni salad, and huge chunks of cake was well worth the trip.
I was in the post office a couple of months back and saw one of the women who worked behind the counter. I mentioned how I missed the place and asked what happened. She said the place was lost due to back taxes.
    I miss Mr.FoFo's

At one time I could almost swear there was a FoFo location in one of the casinos. I think it was Motor City before the renovation.

And at one time, before 2nd Street,
    FoFo's was on Evergreen. A party store/deli,
    near Ford H.S.

Yes yes, we seem to get the idea that Mr. FoFo's was an iconic sort of place for a lot of people.

But does anyone have more information on them? Such as why that name? Why did they close down? When did they close down? What happened to the owners? Have they moved on and opened up a new place that serves up this great food?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

Mr. FoFo's has been at the Hazlewood & Second location for at least 30 years. As I recall it started as one shop and eventually took over the entire row. It was a big hit when it started and I remember the street always being parked up with customer cars.

Today's New York Times [[11-9-20) Cooking posted an article, This Is the Best Poundcake by Sam Sifton. He gives that honor to Otis Lee, the founding owner of Mr. FoFo's.

Accompaning the article is a brief video of his son, Keith Lee, making a pound cake as he reminisces about his growing up working at Mr. FoFo's. It's a delightful way to spend 5 minutes!
