"... Few Catholics realize that in all but three of the 13 original colonies, Catholics were the subject of penal measures of one kind or another during the colonial period. In most cases, the Catholic Church had been proscribed at an early date, as in Virginia where the act of 1642 proscribing Catholics and their priests set the tone for the remainder of the colonial period.

Even in the supposedly tolerant Maryland, the tables had turned against Catholics by the 1700s. By this time the penal code against Catholics included test oaths administered to keep Catholics out of office, legislation that barred Catholics from entering certain professions [[such as Law), and measures had been enacted to make them incapable of inheriting or purchasing land. By 1718 the ballot had been denied to Catholics in Maryland, following the example of the other colonies, and parents could even be fined for sending children abroad to be educated as Catholics. .."

Quote: "the prof. said that slavery in western Africa was more like indenture. It wasn't forever and it wasn't brutal."

It was just short term slavery which is ok?

Talks about putting Mary Kay Ash in the books as some sort of Henry Ford-esque figure. Heh, maybe in Texas but not on most other states.

From today's Free Press: Roosevelts down, McCarthy up as conservatives spin history to right
    The right is rewriting history.

The most ballyhooed effort is in Texas, where conservatives have pushed the state school board to rewrite guidelines, downplaying Thomas Jefferson, playing up conservatives and challenging the idea that the Founding Fathers wanted to separate church and state....

The Jamestown settlers? Socialists. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton? Liberal professors made up all that bunk about him advocating a strong central government....
This shameless historic revisionism demonstrates that their only remaining tool is deception. They've squandered the last of their integrity on this and they just don't care about the consequences.

Evidently it was to the Africans who sold other Africans to the American slave trade. Or maybe they were just interested in the money or whatever they got from the trade and didn't give a hoot what happened to the people they sold. Is there still slavery in the African muslim states?

There aren't many school districts that can afford textbooks anyway. Not buying rightwing history texts sounds like a good way to save money.

Africans that were sold into slavery did not know the difference between slavery and indentured servitude, nor did they care. The believed that they were going to be killed and then, most likely, eaten as this is what they would have expected had they not been subsequently sold into slavery.

We often forget when talking about races, whether they be black Africans, American Indians, or white Europeans, that the greatest atrocities committed within each race were committed by members within each race. The cruelty exhibited by white Europeans against white Europeans [[WWII, WWI, etc.) far outdid any cruelty to the African slaves they bought. In fact, they had every interest in protecting those slaves because to lose them would have been a financial loss.

And, yes, there still is slavery in African Muslim states. Ever hear of Sudan? http://gvnet.com/humantrafficking/Sudan.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Sudan
