    Default MCS reskinning feasible?

Would something like this be welcomed for the Michigan Central Station? Talk about turning an "eyesore" into something else!

I'd like to see it restored in the traditional fashion, but if something like this would work, it might be the best hope, i.e. raise the profile of the building and the "gateway" area.

Just look at the Bo-blo boats and you'll know it's a baaaad idea. Whereas the goals were different, conservation of a boat versus hiding an eyesore, the outcome will be the same; both look like hauted objects....

The Secretary of the Interior would not like your idea. Maybe you can use that so Matty will do it anyway?

    In a Christos-like manner?

Um, why does this idea seem lifted from MAD magazine?

I have decided I want to simply stabilize the building and use it as it is -- as a ruin. detroit's pantheon or colliseum

That woman smacking her head in the above picture pretty much sums up this thread.

This is for buildings that are viable but ugly. MCS has exactly the opposite problem.

"The Secretary of the Interior would not like your idea."

I think this thing has a lot of promise, if it pans out; this "wrap" concept would work very well regarding mothballing. It seems that this could keep the building environmental conditions stable and provide energy for minimal lighting and perhaps some pumps to keep lower levels dry.

    The short answer: NO.

I would rather marvel at MCS's diry & broken romanesque facade than look at a giant piece of IKEA furniture. Take this idea and bury it.

What do you mean by "reskinning"? Do you mean replacement of the entire facade?

Sure, it can be done. But is it worth the investment?

What's the rationale. Reminds me of when New York approved the idea of putting up fake "windows" in the South Bronx so that motorists whizzing by at 60 mph wouldn't be offended by the blight.

Through neglect, its owner has already reskinned it -- to look like him.

What an excellent idea! Put a paper bag over all the unused skyscrapers in Detroit.

It would probably be as effective, well built, and long lasting as the plastic booties around the light posts around the city.

It does look like an idea from Mad Magazine!

And if we have any abandoned cars in the streets, we'll just put one of those car wraps on it.

If somone dies, don't bother to move'em --wrapp'em. Preferably in place with a clear baggie wrap in an upright position so they look like healthy shoppers in our downtown area.

    That is all.

Those skins are ugly, looks better just standing the way it is for now.

Maybe if a billionaire owned it, he could renovate it.
Oh yeah, one that isn't made of pure evil and operates a truck and bridge business out of the death star.

Is Christos even still alive? His wrap of the Berlin Parliament Building [[before the glass dome was added) looks rather ugly... although he has done some thing that looked pretty cool.

And put a big bow on the top so it looks like a Christmas present.

That sample building in the picture looks like when people are too lazy to wrap a present and they just put it in a bag. Other cities have bag ladies, we have bag buildings.

That cracked me up! But in some cities they do things that approach this. For instance, in empty storefronts they'll put up cheery-looking drapes.

Here's a reskinning project that didn't go well:

Exactly. It's like Trojan ENZ for buildings. Ribbed her her pleasure [[or if you want to be selfish about it, turn it inside out so it'll be ribbed for your pleasure).
