Default The 'Drunkest' Cities Of 2010 List, Detroit #34

Personally I do not care,
but there may be someone who does.

The 'Drunkest' Cities Of 2010 List
by Mike Baron

There are cities that enjoy drinking, and well... then there's the Fresno.
A new list has been released that will have some Mayors embarrassed or even angry, it is the "drunkest" cities in America list.
Men's Health Magazine has compiled records from 100 cities for a piece in their march edition. The rankings were based on various DUI stats, frequency of binge-drinking, alcohol-related car crashes and death rates from alcoholic liver disease.

MHM gave 13 cities a grade of "F," and cited Fresno, California as the worst offender.

On the flip side, Boston is the "least drunk" city Men's Health says.
Here's how the cities ranked:
1.) Fresno, CA F
2.) Reno, NV F
3.) Billings, MT F
4.) Riverside, CA F

Well, they obviously didn't include Hamtramck in their sampling.

Ditto, I also don't care. As a matter of fact I have at times contributed to this ranking.

I sort of like Detroit's good selection of dive bars. Maybe too much so.

New Orleans is 21st? I find that hard to believe. I figured it would be #1 or 2.

I read the methodology on how this was done, there are a lot of environmental factors. For example, the ranking includes DWIs. Therefore, car dependant cities would be high. Also included is liver desiese, which skews it towards older populations. Cities without drunks include New York City and Chicago. Salt Lake City ranks as a more drunken city than New York. Young Cities like Lansing or Ann Arbor, which are loaded with drunkards don't even make the list.

Obviously "Beer Riot" East Lansing was not considered either.

Would not be such a bad idea for Dyes posters to meet a maybe Nancy Whiskey or the Bridge Cafe [[dive bar on Fort St.) or the Stonehouse and try to bump the Detroit ranking up a few notches.

That is some pretty weak methodology on their part. I suppose that would be a hard list to create but I think if they included more factors it might be more accurate. Then again that would take more man power and probably more money. Regardless, this ranking is grossly inaccurate.

Ohhhh, now you're taking all the fun out of it. Wouldn't it be nice to be in the top ten? At least it would be fun trying.

Ya but in all honesty only college towns would really be in the top ten if it was really about the "drunkest" cities... with East Lansing at the top :P

I believe Reno as #2, though. Having lived there for six years, I can testify that town's full of drunks and drug addicts.

Not that there anything wrong with that...

I keep telling my mother, "Mom, leave Reno, you are giving it a bad reputation. Does she listen?? Noooooo.... ".

It would be better to do a per capita of beer, wine, and liquor sales. Though Party Cities like Miami, Atlantic City, or Las Vegas would be way up on top.

But Lansing scores low in DWI due to everyone within close proximity to Grand River, and in Liver damage due to young average age. I doubt E Lansing by itself could be large enough to compete!

Yes but that is my point. How can you account for the drunkenness of a city by liver cirrosis and DWI's when it is clear that college towns have young people that get drunk all the time. Should that not count?

If this were accurate it would read

1 Las Vegas
2. Reno
3. Laughlin

C'mon...Have these guys been in this state before?

Where did they test the Nevadans, at the Churches of The Latter Day Sainsts?

Now that I have experienced some winter in Detroit [[and told that it was relatively mild while I was out) I am not going to point any fingers. I helped myself to a couple of shots of Canadian Club just top warm my bones a little bit.

But still it must be nice to hear that there are worse places than Detroit in some sort of poll wherein being number 1 is a bad thing.

You've got that right!!!! About 10 years ago on a lark I decided to take a cross country road trip to the end of I-94 - it was something I'd wanted to do ever since my childhood.

It winds up in Billings. You are absolutely correct about there being absolutely nothing there.

I can't believe Houston didn't make it at all. I find the idea of visiting the rest of those places scary.

I went last year around my 19th birthday...I have heard since then that the several clubs that cater to 19- and 20-year olds have been a lot emptier since the passport requirement kicked in. When I was there, it had the feeling of a cottage industry, since most of the teenagers who came from Detroit for the weekend were in the same hotel, and going to the same 2-3 clubs, and the casino.
