Detroit Mayor Dave Bing presented the American Red Cross today with a check for $3,500 to help with the earthquake recovery efforts in Haiti.

The money was donated by Bing and his executive staff. Bing also pledged that more cash would come from city employees. Last week the mayor sent an e-mail to all city workers encouraging them to donate to the Red Cross.
“We are extremely grateful for this heartfelt support of our organization’s relief efforts in Haiti,” Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Chapter CEO James Laverty told Bing. “I would also like to thank you for your effort in encouraging others to do the same.”
As of Saturday, the American Red Cross has raised more than $87 million for relief efforts in Haiti.
