    Default Ending Piracy off Somalia

The solution is so simple I can't believe no one has thought of it.

The United States acquisitions a number of merchant vessels. Besides a sailing crew, it has aboard fifty well trained sharpshooters and rocket launcher experts. They sail hoping to get hijacked.

We'll call the unit "Stop The Robberies, Enjoy Safe Shipping".

The acronym, of course, is STRESS.

Not bad Ray. That, and/or, patrolling in force and administering justice via police actions/force with extreme prejudice. Add in a blanket refusal of paying a dime in ransom [[removing incentive).

    1. How many vessels will be needed? The ocean is a big place.
    2. It wouldn't take 50 sharpshooters to defeat a handful of teenagers.
    3. Why do WE have to pay for it?

Just teach the good folks at Blackwater to sail.

Oh hell - the ships need to find another route - just stay away from that part of the ocean. I know, I know - it's probably too far off course and a longer route to get where they need to go. Whatever they're hauling would be made too expensive. Right? All the cargo becomes more expensive anyway if it gets stolen and lives are lost. So quit dangling temptation at them. Leave 'em high and dry and stay out of those waters.

But Ray's plan would work too.

OH ! you mean the Detroit police execution squad we used to have back in the day. I'm sure it will have the desired affect in Somalia , just like it did in Detroit when CAY sailed to office because of that acronym.

As if those pirates wouldn't simply move to other routes for their ransom if the current dangerous waters were avoided.

In the past couple of days, Canadian military caught seven pirates after the pirates attacked a ship, and Dutch commandos freed hostages held by pirates near Yemen. In both cases, the pirates were questioned, disarmed, then let go!!
Canadians claimed that there were no Canadian laws that they could apply.

Does this do anything to prevent more attacks?

No , it doesn't but you are looking at this as a typical thug, blackmail common type of crime. This is a political issue where several things happened to make these people do what they do . If we or any country starts locking up or killing these people in a big way guess whats going to happen to the next ship they hi-jack with the flag of a country they hate because of its treatment of them.

Look this has been going on since the early nineties if this was just a simple thug, hi-jack issue it would have been solved by now.

So, what is the solution? Do ships in international waters have a right to travel free of the threat of piracy, or should they offer tribute to anyone who chooses to accost them?

I posted this link to Time magazine because this is such a convoluted situation probably some political and military solutions will have to be used to get this situation under control.

Can't we equipt the terrorists with GM products ? They all seem to be driving Toyotas. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I know, our car industry will just have to do a better job of getting our vehicles out there

It is a threat against our, and our allies interests in addition to acts of war. We need to respond accordingly with overwhelming force and adamant refusal to pay a dime of ransom. Take out the incentive and prosecute the guilty with extreme prejudice. No appeasement, no running away.

Are they committing the acts in Somali waters, or those that fall under international jurisdiction???

    Why not use submarines?

Who cares where they are doing it?

Submarines would be powerful, expensive, and imprecise for this type of work.
