Default ABC picks up pilot set in Detroit

It sounds like the format for The Office or Parks and Recreation. While it will most likely be filmed in LA, hopefully they can research the city so they don't screw up on basic facts.

In "Detroit," a fictional documentary crew follows a top homicide division. It has a realistic yet sometimes humorous tone.
Realistic? Detroit has a "top homicide division"? Who knew?

Will it be filmed here? Or in Toronto?

No announcement has been said where it will be filming. It would be great for it to be filmed in Detroit --- BUT realistically how would that happen -- I don't think that any studios have been built in the area. They could be coming out to do some location shots though, that would be fun.

Instead of ABC Network call the pilot '187 Detroit', they should called it 'Motor City Progress.'

    Better than "Detroit 9000."

You mean like the remake of Assault on Precinct 13?

Is that the movie where Detroit has a vast forest right next to downtown?

Yeah that always made me laugh.

Haha. It's an urban "prairie" -- not a forest.

Yeah, the sad thing is, we really used to have one of the most respected homicide divisions in the country, as recently as the 80's and 90's.

I watched that scene and thought to myself, "Was precinct 13 supposed to be the Belle Isle precinct?" Several people in the audience laughed out loud when they made the transition from the precinct to the forrest.

Anyone ever see the movie Narc? Even though it was filmed mostly in Toronto, I thought they did a decent job of making it look like Detroit. They also made good use of the limited filming they actually did in Detroit, including the shots of Jason Patric sitting on Belle Isle and walking along Woodward Avenue questioning civilians.

The moment I knew Assault was crap was when they said they had to be diverted to a highway that doesn't exist in Detroit.

Narc was a damn good film.

Wasn't "Martin" set in Detroit? Not that they shot more than a few feet of footage in town, but we can all hope that they keep this show real. Remember, we're talking Hollywood here. The show could do more harm than good regarding the cities image.

For those that haven't watched the show, A&E's "The First 48" did several episodes in Detroit. I was a bit embarrased by the segments inside 1300 Beaubien like the lab tech using an old ratty-assed refrigerator as a 'super glue chamber' to help raise fingerprints.

I'd be more interested in a "the Wire" type show rather than a 'NYPD Blue' type show... if the pilot is greenlit for a season/half-season, hopefully they'll include locals as consultants to the producers/writers, also local-based writers period.. shoot exteriors here...

I recall seeing one of those "First 48"s in Detroit that was actually solved. The perp jumped into the river.

187 is the California penal code section for homicide, nothing to do with Detroit, so it is half-assed before it even gets out of the blocks.

It'll probably be filmed in the South Bronx which ought to enhance Detroit's rep.

There was a show in the 90's that briefly aired, called Easy Streets that was partially shoot here. It had a good storyline, but unfortunately the masses prefer stupid crap like reality TV, and it was canceled mid-season.

If they're going to set a show in town, I'd rather see a sit-com than another crime show.

EZ Streets remains one of my all time favorite shows, despite it's short run. It was well written and featured some great performances from Joe Pantoliano and Jason Gedrick. I loved the opening credit shots showing the Ren Cen and Ambassador Bridge, along with little scenes like one of the characters looking for hiw wife at the Hy Grade Deli on Michigan Ave. Very topical, too, with a Mayor struggling with the issue of whether to support casino gambling and crime bosses battling for control of the rackets. I've hated CBS ever since they cancelled it.

I'm going to have to dig through my old VHS tapes now and rewatch the episodes I taped when they aired.
