Thread: Whalers

    Default Whalers

Why don't the whaling ships shoot the whip that are disrupting their whaling activities? A well placed round would blow the prop off and they would be dead in the water with no loss of life.

This is almost textbook trolling, well done. Well, aside from the spelling errors and complete ignorance of international treaties.

Hey fuck you all, it was a simple question, I'm not a lawyer and don's know international law, I didn't go to college but I did grow up in Detroit and still consider it my home. What a bunch of assholes.

The first red flag would be this:

Whaling is practiced by Norway,Iceland and Japan, all developed countries that, [[like all developed countries except the USA), provide health care to anybody, even "losers".

The second red flag is this:

The whaling industry in these countries does not make a profit and continues only due to government subsidies.

    THAT'S SOCIALISM!

disclaimer: Science Daily is a publication that embraces traditional science, rather than the cultish "smartscience" [[TM) developed by and for followers of the Bush admin.

    Obvious conclusion:

    Pro whaling=pro socialism.

This sounds like something you'd do at a roller rink back in the day. Sort of a combo of "shoot the duck" and "crack the whip".

    The highlighted words are key.

I don't know how much gunnery practice at sea you've had, but take it from personal experience that that sort of accuracy from the deck of a moving ship with a moving target is damned near impossible. You could get within 5 feet or so, but 5 feet forward would sink the vessal and 5 feet aft would miss altogether.

So maybe they don't do it because they don't want to be responsible for killing people. Just a thought.

I just saw the report on Worldfocus [[PBS) that I think larrym is referring to. A whaling ship was being attacked [[rammed?) by a speedboat. The whaling ship tried unsuccessfully to discourage the speedboat from getting closer by using water cannons, but then resorted to ramming the speedboat and damaged it. Those on the speedboat were rescued [[by the whaler?).

    I agree. A ship has a right to self-defense.

I saw the film, and thought that was one Bad Ass looking speedboat.

This event happened Wednesday but this thread was started on Tuesday. Maybe it's a time zone difference or maybe there were multiple events.
Boat hit in Antarctica whaling protest

Sydney-- A conservation group's boat had its bow sheared off Wednesday after it was struck by a Japanese whaling ship in the frigid waters off Antarctica during ongoing confrontations over an annual whale hunt, the group said. The boat's six crew members were safely transferred to another of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's vessels, the newly commissioned Bob Barker. The boat is named for the American game show host who donated $5 million to buy it.
It was a horrible way to start a thread any way you look at it. People should take more pride in their posts.

Does anybody know who the maker of the speed boat was ? When I first started doing Autocad at home back in 92, I designed a boat just like that for practice. [[minus the vertical fins).

I'm glad this happened actually. And glad that no one was harmed. If these folks are in opposition to something, they need to employ some other legal means to get the activity changed. Rather than interfering with a vessel within it's rights and in legal commerce. It is no different than any sort of terrorism. They should be arrested at their hailing port for risking the lives of everyone involved. Some of the animal and environmentalist groups are nothing more than vigilantes, taking the law in to their own hands. I'll bet they'll be more careful next time. Morons.

According to Wikipedia's Earthrace article it was designed by Craig Loomis Design Group and built by Calibre Boats.

no "being more careful" -- the boat was intentionally rammed. guess what? the Ady Gill has every bit as much right to be in that water as the whaling ship does. the whalers are the criminals here.

Legal commerce? Whaling is banned by international treaty, which Japan is also signed onto. It's in no way legal, and since nobody else is going to do anything about it, let them have at it. The means they use to harass these breakers of international law are just as legal as their hunting. I have little sympathy for anybody involved, let them crash their boats into each other, it's not my dime.

Apparently you're unfamiliar with maritime "right of way". They intentionally pulled into the path, they got ran over, tough titty. Any idiot knows how dangerous that is. Try it on the Detroit river with an ore ship. Tell them how much right to be there you have. ha.

These people need to get a hobby. I guarantee 90% of their supporters have never even seen a whale other than on television. If they were eradicated it would make absolutely no difference. Really, what deterrent is it to this whaling ship to have a bunch or Bambi loving tree huggers hanging around the bow in an expensive speedboat? They aren't accomplishing anything by doing that. In their idiotic minds they feel they are having an effect, just appeasing their supporters.
