Thread: Bonfire!

    Default Bonfire!

Anybody know what was going up in flames in the Rosa Parks / Grand River area early evening? I was on the streets working and coming in on eastbound 94 all the way to the 75 exchange gave me a good radial ground-level experience [[with smoke under the over passes), but even in my Express I wasn't high enough to see what was flaming.

I don't know what it was but I was driving SB on 14th street towards the train station when I saw the smoke around 5pm. I was behind a fire chiefs [[not sure of the ranks) Crown Vic. He didn't have his lights on but all of 14th st. was filled with smoke south of Grand River. I came back up Rosa Parks at 5:45 and the fire was pretty much put out by then and 1 of the trucks left. While sitting at the Rosa Parks/Grand River light a Farrow Demolition cube truck went through the intersection followed by a tractor-trailer carrying a excavator.

Needless to say I was VERY surprised to see Farrow getting there so quick. Firefighters where still on the scene.

Yes, it was Consumers Market at Grand River between Calumet and Canfield. It was quite the blaze! I was photographing for most of it. At one point the entire front facade of the building came tumbling into the street, narrowly missing our brave guys with the hoses.

Pics coming soon! I am downloading them from my camera now.

PS - I hate to be conspiratorial, but this one rings of suspicion to me. This place was guilty of stealing electric & gas back in March and I never noticed if it was open since then. Could it be the owner was trying to cash in on his insurance?

The freep article is gone now, but here is the old DYes thread about it:

And a WWJ article [[does not mention Consumers but the Freep article did at one time)

George, I want to see the pics!

I guess one of the trucks hit a civilian vehicle: http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/2...9/detail.html#

Watching Channel 4 right now to see if says anything. So this place was still open?
