    Default The Detroit Youtube thread.

If someone drops a thread one of my first sources for information is not Google, it's youtube. It's a great source for material from yesteryear and it's most of the time a surprise to me.

Let me open this topic with this moving tribute to this city.

John Rich - "Shutting Detroit Down".

    There's more.

    Abandoned skyscrapers of Detroit.
[[Great music score!! At 1'56", take a last look at an intact Lafayette.)

If you really want to get depressed, see this 10 minute video.
    Detroit Ghetto.
It almost looks like a set for "Modern Warfare 2". The music is appropriate for the mood. Can't see where they are driving. They are moving at quite a speed. What is that demo structure at 5'27"?

If you have anything to add, feel free to do so.

This vid on YouTube is a slant against the several left run Mayoral administrations, and a very negative view of D town.

This is more depressing than the Crowder thing. In fact it might be the most depressing Detroit vid I've ever seen.

OK, some of this stuff may be a big downer, but as a general idea, I think this is a great idea for a thread.

Default DETROIT: City on the Move

    Total duration 18 minutes:

This one recurs here frequently. May as well get it registered early. From 1965:

This public domain film narrated by then-mayor Jerome P. Cavanaugh was made in 1965 to promote Detroit. The city faced many urban problems and its population was in decline. These difficulties were amplified by the 1967 riots, which are seen by many as one of the most significant events which led the city into a forty year decline. Since the mid 50s, the population has dropped by half and the infrastructure has been destroyed or has decayed due to abuse and neglect.

This film is pretty funny for the mayor's unenthusiastic reading of the narration and the film's denial of the problems which went on to destroy the city, but it wasn't so funny for those who lived this slow-motion deconstruction.

Finally, though, since 2000, the central city truly has been showing signs of life again as investment and residents return to the core, renovations of streets and buildings take place, and new construction develops, but whether this encouraging development can spread out to the far-flung neighborhoods remains to be seen. Fortunately, Detroit has more cultural jewels remaining than those unfamiliar with it tend to credit it, and this greatly helps its prospects.

Speramus meliora, resurget cineribus. We hope for better things, it shall rise from the ashes. Put your hands up for Detroit!

After watching the clip, while it did show the city in a negative light, it was for the most part correct [[the UAW contract info & job bank info was dated).

Entitlements gone wild did lead the city to where its at today.

But in general even not concerning MCS anyone who's into trains would enjoy this I'm sure [[I'm not a train nerd but I'll be there for MCS).

I haven't watched any of the vids on here yet the comments that go along with them remind me of all of the warnings on tv that go along with medications that are supposedly good for you!
Anyway this thread is a great idea as long as we post vids that give our GREAT DETROIT CITY something to live up to .

It may be a bit negative but it makes many valid points.

A couple recent short driving tours of some streets in Downtown Detroit I found:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHGSi2zXWIo Part 1 - beginning at the Premier Parking Garage [[Hudson's) traveling on Farmer, past the Skillman Library Branch, under Compuware, views of the historic Old Wayne County Building, traveling on Bates, and finally turning onto Cadillac Square near the Cadillac Tower. Amazing how many people walk out or start walking out in front of traffic!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTFUVsjSvuw Part 2 - Beginning on Cadillac Square, this tour takes you around Campus Martius Park on the loop and westbound onto Fort Street. Views include the Campus Martius ice rink, DDOT city buses, and the Fort Street streetscape.

It will be valuable footage some day.

Would be great to remake that very clip with curerent pictures and the commentary of Cavanaugh. And see what's left of the city.

    Renaissance State of Mind
Video by Pontiac rapper Ro Spit formerly of Binary Star and singer/poet Monica Blaire. It's a remake of Jay Z's NY State of Mind. This video is representing the whole metro Detroit area, but the shameless plugs of his clothing store gets kinda old quick. It's a really good video and the chorus is something all of us who live outside Detroit can relate to when we go out of town. When people ask where we're from, instead of saying our small suburb it's a lot easier to just say "I'm from DEEEEETROIT"
