Default Detroit in RUINS! [[Crowder goes Ghetto)

Just saw this on Utube and wondered who else had seen it and your thoughts.

I looked at some of the comments, but most were from people who clearly do not know the area, except for the occassional "gem" like this one:
"That is true. I'm from Detroit. I actually lived four blocks from that big abandoned building. It was so hard to get out." Sure.
I read a comment about there being institutionalized corruption, which I think is much closer to any root of the problem than much of the tired anti-union, Obama-bashing stuff going on in the video. [[BTW, I've been told I'm republican, for what that's worth). A credible story about the problems and current situation in Detroit I would suggest should be done in several installments by someone local who KNOWS...starting with those of you on this board who live within city limits and sleep here at night.

Interesting! I see quite a bit of data free analysis on one hand, and a lot of assembly of facts that support a certain position, while ignoring other facts that might trend otherwise. Some facts were actually incorrect as well. Nice piece of work for what it is.

The rantings of an opinionated 22-year-old Canadian shill for the Republican party. Just what we were all waiting for! Mind you, this is the guy who once claimed that the Canadian health care system was "too expensive", even though they spend [[as a percentage of their GDP) two-thirds of what we do on health care.

Anyone notice how Mr. Crowder kindly listed the political party of each mayor going back to Jerome Cavanagh, despite Detroit's mayoral elections being officially nonpartisan since 1915? Why stop there? What about Louis Miriani and Albert Cobo? Aren't they at fault too? Oh wait--they were Republicans, so we can't implicate them!

I'm sure Mr. Crowder is a real academic. Nah, just another idiot with a camcorder.

True folks can blame the Mayor Cavanaugh's " Modern Cities" blockbusting, insurance redlining projects; the UAW and DFT's rediculous monetary policies for Detroit's plight. However the real evidence is on segregation, xenophobia, political corruption urban street riots, white flight, gangs, drugs, ecominic flight and black control. Detroit will never solve these urban problems unless we stand up and take back our streets.

    WORD FROM THE STREET PROPHET

because changing Detroit takes action not talk.

Default People believe what they hear

People who dont live there or never have only know what they hear and outside of this forum you hardly ever hear anything positive about it. I tell people I'm from Detroit and their reply is usually "I'm so sorry". Its still a beautiful city with LOTS to offer. That city has lost more beautiful architecture that most cities have ever had. Yes I stay homesick. STILL

I think his wikipedia entry said he was born in Detroit, but moved to Montreal as a child.

I agree with Danny on this one- I think that the issues he lists certainly exacerbated the problems we face as a region, and Detroit as a city, but the migration of people and resources out of the city were also caused by issues of race and class, not just crime and taxes/regulation.

Funny that he grew up in Suburban Montreal, as it faced a similar situation in the 60's and 70's, as many English Canadians fled to Toronto and took their corporate headquarters with them. Again, like Detroit, a mix of good and bad people did not like the rumbings of Quebecois nationalism. The exit from Montreal has always seemed similar to the exit by so many from Detroit.

An interesting and well-put together video, but it is guilty of only showing one side in a subtle and manipulating way by presenting near-facts as truth and ignoring the other side of Detroit that is historic, interesting, livable, and populated.

He also conveniently ignores the entire economic history of the past 30+ years in the U.S., including mass deindustrialization, the shipping of many middle class and working class jobs overseas, the shift to a primarily speculative rather than productive economy, and the "trickle up" effect of economic and taxation policies that have created large and growing income disparities by redistributing our nation's wealth upwards and increasingly concentrating it in a very small percentage of the population.

Detroit is the canary in the coal mine of this country's economy. Hopefully, other cities won't suffer as badly, and won't make some of the just plain bad choices that we've made here, but if out national economic and social trends continue in the direction in which they've been heading, many American places are going to become more and more like Detroit. And you sure can't pin that on "liberals," because "liberals" haven't been in control for a very very long time.

I know I am going to get slamed for what I am about to say, and if I offend anyone I appoligize in advance, but is how the world views Detroit and frankly how it is.

Perhaps someone here should put together a video of how vibrant and alive Detroit is just like Chicago or New York......oh thats right its not.
Instead everyone wants to attack the messenger and his motive.....hmmmm After spending some time in NY and Chicago.....I don't remember driving on one of their roads and looking up at the carnage along the way from 8 mile to Deaborn [[I94)
Or not having any viable nightlife to speak of......Its not that I hate Detroit, I don't I wish it were like those cities, but sadly its not. Yes there are great parts, I do not deny that, but in comparison it is minimal. All my wishing and praying that things will turn around will not make it so. Detroit is what it is.....

The Canadian Bozo who made this YouTube video is just another example of some indoctrinated dummy with a camcorder trying to "get somewhere" in his career by becoming the next Geraldo Rivera.

Sensationalist nonsense. Sure, we know what Detroit looks like, but instead of turning it into a referendum on Democratic mayors over 50 years time, how about a list of solutions?

Fingerpointing is the only thing the fascist Reich is good at. Our Rethuglican congress for 6 years under the Bush Crime Family pointed at governement and kept shouting, look!!! It's broken, it doesn't work!!!

All the while they were defunding the FDA, Dept. of Education, Transportaion, the EPA, so we get poisoned food and tainted toys from China, pollution run amok, and all the while they're grabbing up taxpayer money through no-bid contracts with the Pentagon through their money laundering operations like Halliburton, Bechtel, KBR, etc.

Chalk this retarded video to nothing more than "ruin porn."

Has anyone seen any bears? He says there have been bear sightings in Detroit.

Out of curiousity, what does bear taste like? Is it similar to any other non-game meat?

No bears that I'm aware of, but by looking at him, I'd say there's a few weasels with camcorders running around.

I think it tastes alot like Crowder Chowder.

Gamey, with lumps of dead skunk pancreas and a dash of moral outrage.

I watched the video and it was interesting. Though this Crowder is right-winged, he told a tale that you can't ignore. Detroit as a city has regressed.

I love Detroit because it is the city of birth but I will not live long enough to see it become the city of the future.

That was a serious question. I have not found any game that I like yet. I dislike the tang and after tastes.

I just figured that this being Detroit there were bound to be a few hunters who had at least tried it and could enlighten me as to the flavor.

Detroit is an excellent backdrop for people to make up a news story. He keeps talking about Obama, what has Obama did or not did for Detroit? He might as well blame ________. It's a failed city. Why? Many reasons, but it has nothing to do with either political party. It's simply had it's day. It was an unsustainable model. Much like our present economy, thanks to "globalization". This kid is making a fool of himself. The worst narration and continuity ever in a documentary, looks like something a 12 year old would put together.

Wow. Self-indulgent capitalization and punctuation [[as if what he's saying is news, and furthermore that it needs to be shouted), and "goes ghetto?" Well played, sir. Stay classy, Steve.

Anyone see Redstate.com listed in his video description? Yeah, go try and follow that site for a day or two and see if you make it through. It's worse than Huffington Post and Daily Kos on the other side of the spectrum, and that's a hard feat. Yes, sometimes you can be judged by who you friends are...

Bear meat can be excellent or horrible! I've had it both ways.

The fat on a bear can give the meat a gamey taste, and as much as possible should be removed. Also those taken in the spring make better table fare [[Less fat after the winter hibernation). It's also crucial that the meat has been handled properly. Bears need to be processed and iced down as soon as possible after harvest as the meat has a tendency to turn rancid rather easily.
