    Default Can you explain......

.....the error in this story, about the man who allegedly designed the current 50 star US flag?

"SAGINAW, Mich. [[AP) — Robert G. Heft, who is credited with designing and sewing America's first 50-star flag, has died. He was 67.

Wakeman Funeral Home says Heft died Saturday at a hospital in Saginaw. A cause of death wasn't immediately available.
Heft, who lived in the Saginaw area, made the flag in 1958 as part of a high school history project in Lancaster, Ohio. He spent more than 12 hours sewing the design at his mother's Singer sewing machine.
The flag was chosen by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to replace the 48-star flag."

Hello? The 50-star flag replaced the 49-star flag. Looks like AP has hired some very young college graduates.

    here's a little tid-bit

In January of 1959, Alaska was admitted into the Union. July 4 of that year, the forty-nine-star flag became official, but it was short lived. By the end of August, Eisenhower signed a proclamation adding Hawaii to the Union, as Heft had predicted. Congressman Moeller brought Heft's flag to the design committee, where Eisenhower himself selected the flag to become the national emblem. On July, 4 1960, Heft and Eisenhower stood together in Washington to watch the first fifty-star flag be raised.

I'll bet that original 59'er is a rarity. I see you can buy them online.

Could flying the 48'er be a protest against a Palin candidacy next time around? Sorry to Hawaii for the collateral damage.

Good catch, Ray1936. I wondered why such a big fuss was made of this guy, as figuring out how to put 50 stars on the flag is not that difficult. It sounds like it was more of a publicity stunt than anything. From Wikipedia:

When Alaska and Hawaii were being considered for statehood in the 1950s, more than 1,500 designs were spontaneously submitted to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Although some of them were 49-star versions, the vast majority were 50-star proposals. At least three, and probably more[citation needed], of these designs were identical to the present design of the 50-star flag.[9] At the time, credit was given by the executive department to the United States Army Institute of Heraldry for the design.
Of these proposals, one created by 18-year old Robert G. Heft in 1958 as a school project has received the most publicity. His mother was a seamstress, but refused to do any of the work for him. He originally received a B- for the project. After discussing the grade with his teacher, it was agreed [[somewhat jokingly) that if the flag was accepted by Congress, the grade would be reconsidered. Heft's flag design was chosen and adopted by presidential proclamation after Alaska and before Hawaii was admitted into the union in 1959. He got an A. [10]
I think maybe I'll buy one of those 49 star flags for the next Presidential election.

When did Obama reference a 57 star flag? And where would the extra 7 stars come from? Are we finally annexing the Maritimes?

If we annexed Mexico and Canada we could have 91 stars, 31 for the Mexican states and 10 more for the Canadian provinces.

What's there to admit? Unless being right means getting hosed. Obama didn't suggest there were 57 states, he said he had already visited 57 of them, with one to go, and that was without visiting Alaska and Hawaii. So he actually implied there are 60 states.

"Uh.....I'll have to have someone get back to you on that."

houses are investment properties. Apartment buildings are investment properties. Office or other commercial spaces are too. homes are places you kick off your shoes, at least on occasion
