    Default New Years Eve Downtown

Hey everyone, first I just wanted to say I love browsing ths forum. It's great to see everyones opinions on topics about the city, and the old pictures are great.

My question is about New Years Eve in Detroit. Most years I have attended house parties and small bars but my g/f and I want to switch it up this year. We love going downtown so we were thinking about going down there.

Does anyone plan on going down there or did anyone attend any cool parties last year? Any particular bars better then others on New Years? Has anyone atteneded the Detroit Princess for New Years or the casino's?

    I appreciate your advice everyone!

Try the Whitney. Buddy of mine worked there and I remember showing up around 1 am, after the toasts and tellinghem we were going for dessert only up on the third floor bar. They put out a breakfast buffet at like 2 am that was the schizz. the tickets for dinner and dancing were like 250 per couple, but all we spent was twelve bucks on a shared dessert and then about twenty more bucks on some drinks. Suckahhhhs.

I believe Inside Detroit is coordinating a New Year's Eve party-hop. Pay once, and you can go to a bunch of different parties around the city.

I'm sure the website [[insidedetroit.org) will have some info, if not, an email to them would do the trick.

    Good luck!

There will be a New Year's Party at the Book Cadillac just like in the old days. It will be in the Crystal Ballroom....it has been completly restored...it looks exactly like it looked way back when....the last time I was in the Crystal Ballroom was my high school prom in 1966.

What? No love for the Millenium Bell? Built by one of the best human beings of all time: Matt Blake.

My buddy, Chris Turner, had a hand in the bell, too.

50 years ago [[ honest) this New Year's Eve, my girl friend [[ now wife) and I doubled with a high school chum and his date [[ now his wife, too) and we drove down from Birmingham to the Willis Show Bar to ring in the New Year. The Whitney was not a restaurant at the time, there [[ obviously) was no Millenium Bell, and the Hard Rock Cafe was still 10 years or so from existing.
Both the Book Cadillac and the Statler [[ I think it was a Hilton hotel then) were still going strong, but way too pricey for us. But the floor show at the Willis was something that neither hotel could have duplicated even if they tried. I can't remember who performed that evening. The Supremes were not yet organized, but that show was a knockout.
We will fondly recall that night as we drive by the old Willis Show Bar on our way to Mario's this New Year's Eve for dinner.

Last year Cliff Bells had a great NYE Party. I'm assuming they're having another one.

New Year's Eve night would be a great time to start a new Detroit tradition. Move the Joe Louis Fist statue onto a pivot and place it next to the Millenium Bell. At the anointed time, the Joe Louis Fist can be drawn back by the festive crowd pulling back on a rope attached to it and released at zero hour New Year's Day. The Fist will strike the Millenium Bell and the crowd will explode in celebration of what they've collectively accomplished.
