Default Rob Parker to open sports bar in Detroit

Rob Parker mentioned during the sports portion of Channel 4 news tonight that he and some others will be opening a sports bar downtown, and that an announcement with more information will be made soon.

He also mentioned that his "name will be on the marque"

Wow, Bob Barker is opening a bar?!

Will this place have the credibility of some of his articles that he's written in the last few years? Will he have to apologize to the public for making ridiculous remarks and getting called out on them?

Is that meant as a draw or a deterrent?

Will you have to be one of his "peeps" or CWPF's to get in?

    "Awww, come on Katrina!"

Just how many CWPFs does he have anyway? Because if Rob Parker had to rely on those to keep the business afloat, the place could be in deep trouble before the place even opens up.

I'd probably go to a sports bar that had KK on the marquee before RP

Leftys isn't that old, it looks like there is a new, big sportsbar being built at the Studio One Apartment site, there's a new one on Monroe Street attached to the casino garage, a relatively new one at the Holiday Inn Express, and that Lucky's place on Jefferson. Didn't know there was that much pent-up demand.

This concept just reminds me of Emmanuel Steward's Place down on Jefferson. Just because you put your name on the marquee doesn't make it a draw.

And putting Rob Parker's journalism to one side, does he fashion himself to be that endearing and trustworthy to the general public to think that his name lends credibility to a sports bar? I'm just wondering if he had just invested money into a sports bar- made it nice, plush & comfortable with good food, decent booze and made it inviting, he would probably done fine. I think about all of the Robert Porcher, Magic Johnson, Derrick Coleman, and John Salley investments that have been made around town and none of them bear their names on their establishments. The only other places that run counter to this idea that I can think of that have a sports celebrity affiliation have been Don Shula's [[it's gone isn't it?) and Cheli's Chili [[which is more of a nick name).

Instead Rob Parker putting his name in the name of the place seems to be a detriment based upon my gut reaction and a lot of DYes people here. I don't think he's as legendary as he thinks he is and it just isn't enough of a reason for people to come check his place out.

But rather than bag on anyone investing some money in the city, I wish this establishment well. It's just my two cents worth more so on Rob Parker than the yet to be opened place.

I'm holding out for Bernie Smilovitz's place.

By the way, HD technology has not been a friend to ol' Bernie.
