Is there any way to make the images bigger in that online directory? Or make them print larger than 3 x 5?

I'm trying to find addresses of my grandfather Albert Silfven, who lived in Detroit from the late 20's - early 50s before moving to Mackinaw. I know from about the mid 30s he lived at 1809 Merrick and later at 14129 Mendota before moving to Mackinaw around '52 or so. My grandma [[his wife) gave me a nice box of vintage post cards.

What is your grandmother's name, names of their children, etc.? I have found an Albert Silfven in Houghton, MI in 1920/1930 census records. Would love to help you find more info.

I'm on my phone now so I can't be sure, but have you tried using the drop down menu near the top left and changing the format to .pdf? You could then save it and print it. I don't know how well it will print on 8x11 paper; the pages of Polk directories are about 11x17.

I willl go back and see if that's something I missed. Yes, I see it now.

My great grandfather, Carl Silfven, ran a photography studio in Hancock, where Albert and his sisters Betty and Ethel were born. My grandmother's name is Dolores Centala Silfven. Most of my mom's mom's family [[the Centalas) are from Metz, MI. My mom's name is Kathleen, and her sisters are Pat, Karen and Linda.

In letters written by Carl to Dolores, he mentions he wishes his son would come back from Detroit to Hancock to help out in the studio. I know he worked for a bunch of bakeries. I guess he was in Hancock in the late 20's as well as Detroit--the online Keeler directory lists him at 7035 Keeler Ave, Apt 8.

I have a handwritten bakery "formula book" of Al's from 1927-28 that mentions the National Biscuit Co. on Baltimore, Wanhala Bakery on Woodrow Wilson, and he worked at "Farm-Crest Baking Co., Medbury & Russell, Detroit, May '33-Jan '34."

I Google Earthed some of the other addresses I found. I'm thinking of doing some drive-bys and shooting photos. I did that in 2003 for the Mendota address [[I was strongly advised not to go to that neighborhood). We drove down Kendall from the east and I saw unmarked police cars out in front of the address, which is on the west side of Mendota, near the corner. I got my picture anyway, but I wouldn't have stopped and gotten out of the van to take it.

I don't believe the Merrick residence is still there. I see a bunch of what look like school buses on Rosa Parks at the end of Merrick, but a field across the street from where Hecla St. ends that is where the house stood.

I appreciate your help, by the way. That pdf thing worked out ok, and now searching that collection for my Dad's side of the family. My other grandfather was a marine reporter for the Straits of Mackinaw up 'til the mid '60s, monitoring freighter passages.

    That's fantastic. Thanks a lot!

I've recently discovered two of my relatives went down with the Titanic, and a distant cousin, Lyyli Silfven, survived and stayed with Carl for a short time before moving to CA. She showed up at his studio out of the blue again in 1938, according to a letter he wrote to my grandmother.

You amaze me with all this. Lyyli's dad and my great great grandfather were brothers, so I guess that would make her my second cousin three times removed? Wow.

Thank you. The images you sent me are perfectly viewable, and genuinely appreciated.

Always glad to help with a good genealogy mystery.
So many great stories to learn from and about those who connect us to Detroit.
My great-great-grandfather was the President of the National Bank of Detroit back in the late 1800-early 1900s. I am always looking for info on my family. Proud to be from the D.

You people are fantastic! I found some long forgotten addresses in the Polk directory. Thanks so much for posting the link.

Now, I have a real stumper here. My grandparents owned a grocery store for a few years in the 1930's. All I know about it is that it was located on W. 6 Mile Rd., across the street from a movie theater and I believe within reasonable walking distance of U. of D. It was on a corner, and my aged relatives think it may have been in the path of I-96, so it most likely no longer stands.

If you can point me to perhaps a business directory of sorts from that era, I might be able to find out where it was.

Also, is there a reasonable way to find out all property addresses owned by an individual? I'm talking about pre-WWII mostly.

Thanks for any advice and information you can provide. You all ROCK!!!!!
