    True, but of all the people who've written the "I was in Detroit for a day and, goodness, what a mess" stories, I think Bob Herbert has gotten it righter than pretty much everyone else I've seen. That's one reason why I like Herbert, who used to write insightfully on local affairs back when I lived in NYC. This situation had causes, causes that reach well beyond this place, causes that have their roots in big decisions made and policies promulgated elsewhere. Our country took a path and part of the cost of that path has been our hometown, and he at least begins to examine that and talk about it.

    Thanks for sharing the link. I'm currently out of town on business, and must say that the comments section is a thing of beauty. For the first time in my entire life, people aren't using the article as an excuse to pile on the D. There seems to be much more thoughtfulness than usual.
