Who did I begrudge??? I was just trying to figure out what the intent was. You have to admit, it's not exactly a conventional approach. Pardon me for trying to learn something. Would you be more at-ease if I just drank the Kool-Aid that the News prints, and make the crass, overgeneralized assumption that "store + Detroit = good"?

Maybe you all could relax your overly-defensive postures once in a while and appreciate that. Not everything is a personal affront, folks.

From one chef to another - you obviously do NOT know Joe - Whether someone has money or was brought up with money is irrelevant - Joe has great character - he is hard working, creative and dedicated to every community he is a part of [[including and especially Detroit - and thank goodness Detroit appreciates him!)

Not "everything" may be a personal affront, but we've heard enough bullshit from you in the past to roll our eyes about yet another pontification from out of state. Maybe you should spend a little more time contemplating how you phrase questions before posting on here. You may have wanted clarification, but your post came across as insulting and demeaning.

I don't think that Joe Posch is deserving of ANY criticism on what he's doing.

    Good for him!

Temporary or permanent.... much ado about nothing....

As long as he's making money and the building owner is making money... why complain?

Actually one of the most interesting "pop up", or temporary retail stores ever in Detroit was the Holiday Bazzar set up on the Main Floor of Hudson's back in 1992.

As I recall generators were brought in to power up the floor as the buildings electric system was pretty well destroyed by then.

Wasn't something similar done with the first PURE DETROIT, in a tiny SE corner of the David Whitney Building on Woodward Ave., after the building had already closed?

But that's just me.

I guess part of the "excitement" of pop-up retail is not knowing whether or not the place is going to be in business tomorrow. And the whole inability to return and exchange goods--that's pretty exciting too.
Sounds like you would rather go to a mall then. Have fun with that.

You are going to try to exchange a 1970's Playboy? Use free internet porn then if you are too cheap to pay for pictures of bewbies.

Or ... do you ever have trouble finding an item in a store because they keep moving it? Well, the fun increases off the scales when they move whole store. Imagine if the whole shopping district was like this. You go into a store to buy a can of tomatoe paste, half-way through the transaction you realize you just bought a brazier.

Actually, I'm just having fun with the idea. Any retail in Detroit is good. I hope the guy success and lots of good press.
And I've been wasting so much time trying to open that jewelry store... this idea is genius! Let's do it! Can we get the rights to call it "Where's Waldo's?"?

Haters only hate the things that they can't get, the things they can't do, and the people they can't be.

I wish we could end the Detroiter on Detroiter hate, but I am starting to think it's just what some people are here to do, assuming what we're here to do is a conscious or unconscious choice.

    Default Pop Up Shops

Now this is a big deal!

Customers swarmed downtown Detroit's holiday pop-up shops this year

Vendors in the Detroit Downtown Markets, a marketplace of 30 temporary shops near Campus Martius and Capitol Park, reported doing such strong business in late November and early December that the markets' operations were extended by three weeks. This includes the small village of shops inside glass huts.

Downtown Markets will now run through Jan. 28, said Francesca George, director of tenant relations for the Bedrock real estate firm. Bedrock organizes the pop-ups marketplace and, along with other Dan Gilbert-companies in the Quicken Loans family, is behind the "Winter in Detroit" marketing campaign.

Given the fricken cold weather, I wonder if it was a mistake to keep these pop-ups going until Jan. 28? I know the idea was to keep them open for the auto show and Winter Blast but will they really do business until then now that the holidays are over? I sure hope the heaters are good.

There might be deals, but most of these shops have unique and fun items. They're not Amazon on Black Friday. That's the draw of them.

I'm sorry, what's the negative of keeping these shops open into January? Are you some sort of communist, anti-entrepreneurial snowflake?

I play outside all seasons, all weather, they make clothes for that.
That also means I'm a very practical "shopper".
Stuff that works well, lasts long time, & I actually use, often, repeatedly.
I'm definitely not seeking out novelty items that just sit on a shelf.

How about you go downtown and take a look around for yourself. Or do you like sitting in your recliner better?

I'm the skeptical type - In fact I'll say its probably crap, not worth the time.
You started with the name calling me a communist, anti-entrepreneurial snowflake.
I'm now out, find some other sucker to waste his/her time.
You've received a lesson in entrepreneuralism.....take it to heart

Go down there and see them. They're marketplaces for merchants that don't have brick and mortar establishments. Some products are Detroit themed, some are just novel ideas like the clothing line for short guys that was featured on Shark Tank, and other little shops. You're the only one bitching about them lasting into January for no good reason.

Uh NO - you got it wrong. I was seeking enticement, some more info.
Reread what I typed. All I wondered if the cold snap would hurt sales.

In any event, it's going back into the 30s and 40s next week, so that should help out foot traffic downtown.

Sometimes I think Minneapolis has the right idea: quite a few of their downtown buildings are connected via covered pedestrian bridges and tunnels.
