Gaz, hate to break the news but this is some garbage indie project. We'll probably see the trailers of the $200mil feature that is shooting in Detroit & surrounding areas sometime next year with release in late 2010 or early 2011.

Now that would be a site to see. How would one "jack" a tank? They weigh so much it would be near impossible. Years ago an experienced and mentally unstable vet "jacked" a tank out here in San Diego and took it for a spin for several miles. His driving skills were apparent, however in the end it did not turn out well for the guy. The incredulous victims who had their vehicles destroyed are almost humorous. I frequently drive past the heavily traveled section of freeway where the driver met his demise.

They have a couple lanes of Michigan Ave. closed at Griswold for a large set. They've attached the word "POLICE" to the new Book Caddilac parking structure and have MASSIVE banners hanging from it. Very cool. Here's a pic;

Recently, while perusing one of those "Knobby Hobby " stores for frames for some prints my son had picked up, I wandered the aisles getting a "geography" lesson with all the foreign made junk. My son had to calm me down when I discovered a triangular casing meant for displaying the flag of a departed veteran which was "Made in China" of course. The reality of this, much more frightening than the premise of the re-make of "Red Dawn".

I am so excited to finally see these real things happening in D.Town. I was as Grand Trunk Pub and saw the place packed with some of the Film Staff. So although it's a hassle navigating around them working downtown, overall it"s also helping out the businesses!!

That was fun... I stuck around after work and watched them blow up the car right on Michigan Ave. Flipped right over. I'll try to grab a still from the video I took. Didn't have the still camera.

No quips about other cars burning on Michigan Ave., please!

Detroit faces siege by Hollywood movie

DETROIT [[Reuters) - Detroit, which has long faced economic collapse and neighborhood abandonment, woke up on Monday to find itself under siege by a foreign army.


The army arrived with camera booms, military trucks, massive pennants and green camouflage extras for a remake of the 1984 action film "Red Dawn," turning a normally lightly populated Motown intersection into a hub of activity.

Several blocks of downtown Detroit will be closed off for up to two weeks during the filming, which appeared to have little impact on traffic flow, but drew curiosity seekers on foot.

Michigan has wooed filmmakers to the state with incentives in a bid to diversify an economy that remains very dependent on the health of the still-struggling U.S. auto industry. Clint Eastwood filmed "Gran Torino" in the Detroit-area.

The Michigan statewide unemployment rate stood at 15.2 percent in August, with Detroit's nearly double that.

"It is rough out here," said Edwin Codwell, who stood nearby watching the filming. "It is tough out here for all of us and it is getting worse."

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has been filming "Red Dawn" around the state for weeks. The filmmakers blew a car into the air near the downtown Detroit intersection on Monday and set off an explosion in a small Detroit building a week ago.

The original movie saw teenagers take to the hills to mount a guerrilla war after their small U.S. town was invaded by Cuban and Soviet soldiers in a Cold War theme.

In the new movie, the soldiers are from Russia and China, and Detroit serves as a kind of anytown USA stand-in for Spokane, Washington, and other places.

On Monday, passersby snapped cellphone pictures of military trucks and actors wearing green fatigues or officers uniforms reminiscent of past decades.

Paul Thomas, a student cycling to medical school, stopped to take a photo from the seat of his mountain bike. The street closings made his ride easier, he said. "They should shut it down more often."

The movie is planned for release in November 2010.

If anyone cares [[and maybe I'm the only geek that does), the eight-wheeled armored fighting vehicles in the one photo above appears to be the Turkish "Pars." They must have rented 'em cheap. They're jointly marketed by a U.S. company for international sale. I also identified the tank as an early-model Abrams. It's distinctive rear grill, which uneven, gives it away.

I was told that the wheeled vehicles were Stryker Attack Vehicles, similar to this one:




I also saw one of them driving down I-94 several weeks ago.

It definitely turned heads on the freeway.

I doubt the military would make the Stryker available.

The headlights and the edge of armor sheet skirt just above the tires matches the Pars, as does the narror slit viewing area for the driver.
