Default Invest Detroit to open $48M innovation hub in former school

The former Thomas Jefferson Intermediate School in Midtown Detroit will have a new lease on life this year, reopening as an innovation hub in the fall after several years of delays. Invest Detroit, which purchased the building in 2018, will anchor the space with 9,400 square feet.
The organization is rebranding the 115,000 square-foot building, at 950 Selden near the John C. Lodge Freeway, as the Jefferson Hub, or J Hub. It’s designed to be a place of innovation for early-stage companies and small businesses. In addition to offering spaces to businesses for lease, it features multiple co-working spaces and shared amenities to “bring people out of their offices,” Marcia Ventura, senior vice president of lending for Invest Detroit, told Crain’s.

A great reuse of that building. We’ve lost so many of the beautiful old schools. I just love seeing them reused.

Was this building once the Lundy Academy? The address seems familiar.

I agree. It's nice to see a school that was still in good enough condition to be repurposed after seeing so many scrapped to the point they could never be repurposed for anything else.

Hah. I thought you had spelled the name wrong. Yes, it was Lundy Academy, but I never knew it was named that until I looked it up just now.

My confusion was because Joel Landy, the late Cass Corridor hippie developer who restored/repurposed the Scott Mansion, along with many other properties, bought the school for $1 from DPS back in the late 90s, on the basis that he would restore and repurpose it as a charter school.

Joel was a good friend of mine and I thought he was crazy. He was. Like a fox. He got a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract out of it.
