Potentially moving to Metro Detroit for work. Schools/Education are very important to us and we are willing to sacrifice or compromise on most anything else to give our children the best shot at success going into adulthood. For each of the main counties in the region, what are the best districts we should be looking into? Our children are still young, so we are really interested in what the public projections are for the long-term if these districts will stay competitive.
So far, my research has shown:
- Wayne: Detroit schools = not good, but Cass Tech High School in the city proper seems legendary and still excellent. No guarantee our children would end up there though from the sounds of it. Plymouth-Canton and Gross Pointe otherwise seems to be the best districts, unsure of high school.
- Macomb: Probably Utica Community Schools or Fraser. There's a highly rated International Academy, but again it sounds like it's something you have to test into with guarantee of enrollment.
- Oakland: Cranbrook looks incredible, but we aren't rich. So Bloomfield, Birmingham, and Troy seem the best realistic options. Is Troy High School proper or Troy Athens the better high school?
- Washtenew: I was surprised to see Ann Arbor schools are not very good considering University of Michigan is right there and such a good college. It looks like Saline Public Schools and Saline High School are really good though.
Other things important to us are sports [Wrestling], any language immersion programs [Chinese], and safety.
