Default Michigan Central Station to get one of Hilton's newest luxury hotels in 2027

A luxury NoMad hotel is slated to take over the top five floors of the redeveloped Michigan Central Station — and could put Detroit on pace to have two five-star hotels open at roughly the same time.

Josh Sirefman, CEO of the Michigan Central nonprofit that oversees the 30-acre campus by Ford Motor Co. in Corktown, said the hotel flag, a recently acquired brand of McLean, Va.-based Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc., is expected to open in 2027 with nearly 180 guest rooms. In addition to the rooms, NoMad — which has a flagship location in London and is also opening a location in 2027 in Singapore — at least two restaurant spaces are envisioned, including one on the depot’s western side, where a carriage house is located to be enclosed in glass.

“The NoMad team, Michigan Central and the Ford teams are very sensitive to adding to the incredible culinary community in Detroit,” Sirefman said during a tour of the property with reporters on Friday.

I'm sure it will be nice but if I'm staying that close to downtown while visiting a city for leisure purposes I'd much prefer to be downtown. With all the weddings booking there they may sell out the hotel many nights just with those.

    Very, very excited for this.

    1. First time there will be a tenant on the top floors. Ever.
    2. I can imagine that this will be quite luxurious and Ford will probably use this for clients, quite a lot.
    3. When can I book and be one of the first to stay here?

Yes! My memory is a little creaky but wasn't the original plan to use the upper floors as a hotel but that fell through because of the Great Depression? So all these years later the plan will be completed?

    Wow. What a story.

No... the MCS opened in 1913, it would have opened a hotel by the Roaring 20s, had that been the plan.

The view from the top of MCS are phenomenal... [I believe this is a Southen photo when it was abandoned]...

Ah! Thanks for the correction. I thought I remembered something about the upper floors never being used.

It looks almost too good to be true, like some Hollywood CGI or something.

JIMAZ.... I forgot to mention the occupancy of the tower. I heard 2 school of thought on that... one is that everything above the 9th floor was never occupied... the other is that everything above the 5th floor was never occupied. Not sure which is correct.

Also... here is the floor plan of an [originally] occupied floor of the tower...

Also, here is a preliminary [year old] transformation of the "enclosed" former carriage entrance. This was also supposed to be the main entrance to the hotel... but not sure if that will be the entrance as a 5 star hotel.

And I remember going back to when this site was just full of memories of the fabulous "ruins' of Detroit. Almost 30 years ago I couldn't even imagine seeing the things I am seeing now when I first joined this site.

Yes, the MCS site's redevelopment [[and the Book Tower downtown) is a big signal of Detroit's gradual but slow and steady comeback, even if the inner suburbs are still a mess.

In terms of hotels and locations, I'd prefer to be a little closer to central Downtown than the MCS, even though I love that building - it's such a classic Detroit landmark.

I stay at the Greektown Hotel Casino, but I wouldn't mind trying the Ren Cen [[Marriott?) on the waterfront or the Westin Hotel on Washington Boulevard.

I'm currently in Tahiti in the South Pacific Ocean, but I may come back to Detroit [[via Las Vegas) later this year around July/August. At that time, the MCS will still be in redevelopment phase.

Yes! 'Who'da' indeed. Considering that at the height of neglect the basement of the whole building was flooded along with a sub-basement!

Crews find sub-basement that wasn't on original Michigan Central Station plans...

I don't think so [although that's an educated guess]. There is a section of the concourse that has protected graffiti.

Lots of misinformation has been spread about the top floors being entirely empty. While every square foot might not have been 100% used for every active year of the station's life, or all floors fully decked out with a marble-lined central hallway, there was plenty of activity. Also, the original floor labeling scheme was ground-mezzanine-pipe loft-storage, then 1-13.

The following was posted by Marianne Briody on the Facebook "Michigan Central Virtual Museum" page:
"Help me understand this--the report says that it will be the first time ever that the top floors [[14-18) will be occupied. That's just not true. In fact, it's ridiculous to think that the entire top half of the building was empty for all those years. Freight Accounting occupied 6-12 and 13 was used for storage of records. I worked on 6, 8, 11 and 12. I spent a lot of time on 13 looking up waybills. Many people worked on those floors. The view from my desk on each floor is very vivid. I could see the score board in center field at Tiger Stadium from my desk on 12. That was not possible from the lower floors. Where is this coming from??? It appears that there's confusion over the re-numbering of the floors. Floor numbers 14-18 didn't exist, but [[of course) the floors [[9-13), did"
