Wow. This has to be the wildest Canadian election I have ever followed. Locally, it saw the unseating of the New Democratic Party MP Brian Masse, who lost so badly he finished third. Also, I can't recall the last time all three Windsor ridings [Windsor West, Essex, and Windsor-Tecumseh] went to the Conservatives.
Masse's loss was part of a bigger national disaster for the NDP, which may end up holding only 4 or 5 ridings. Its leader, Jagmeet Singh, lost his riding and has resigned.
The Conservatives, who had high hopes until the trade war and threats to Canadian sovereignty ignited a surge of patriotism, saw their leader, Pierre Poilievre, who had leaned toward the US administration and once held a big lead in the polls, become its victim and even lose his riding and sink his party in defeat.
So the Liberals will get to form the next government, but it is unclear if they will have a majority in Parliament or if they will go into coalition. The latter situation may give the devastated handful of NDP MPs some leverage.
It will be questionable how long the new government can endure. Thoughts?
