"Demolition day is getting closer for the long-abandoned Southwest Detroit Hospital.
"The Detroit City FC professional soccer club gained an initial approval Wednesday for its request for a public subsidy to help demolish the blighted hospital at 2401 20th St., near the city's Corktown and Mexicantown neighborhoods, and where the organization hopes to then build a new stadium.
"Southwest Detroit Hospital opened in the mid-1970s and the building once clad in shiny stainless steel - has been completely vacant since 2007 and can be seen by passing motorists on Interstate 75, I-96 and Michigan Avenue.
"The soccer oganization bought the hospital last year from prominent Detroit landlord Dennis Kefallinos, who once teased a redevelopment vision for the site that never happened.
"On Wednesday, board members of the Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority voted unanimously to approve a Brownfield plan that would reimburse Detroit City FC for the hospital's demolition costs to a tune of $5.9 million over 21 years."
