Default Middlebelt [Dead Man's Hill] Closed for the week...

    From article:

A woman was hospitalized after a sledding incident at 'Dead Man's Hill.'

This popular sledding spot was empty Thursday afternoon after a series of accidents occurred over the past week. One involved Jessica Wollweber, who'd been in the hospital since Thursday, according to her mother, Michele Maley.

Safety concerns have been raised, some wondering why no barricades were put up for people sledding.

Shiawassee Hill in Farmington has a berm topped by a double straw bale barrier with netting to keep sledders from flying into Farmington Road. I once met a middle-aged guy deep in his cups who boasted about the old days when he and others sledded across the road, and no doubt prompted the change.

Even with the protections, when the hill iced over, I have seen some mighty collisions at the bottom of the hill with kids flung in the air. Broken arms and more are not unknown. But isn't that risk a part of being a kid?

One of my favorites sounds comes after a snowfall with hearing the roar of shrieks and laughter coming from the sledding hill.

That piqued my interest so I looked up the longest sledding hill in the world. It's The Big Pintenfritz in Switerland at 12.5 km/7.8 miles long. Yikes!

Lowell: Broken arms and more are not unknown. But isn't that risk a part of being a kid?
Sure, yes.........but if you read the article, this happened to the kid's mom.......and this is not a broken arm:

"that her daughter slammed head-first into a tree while sledding at Middlebelt Hill. She suffered a traumatic brain injury and immediately underwent surgery at the hospital. She says her daughter also suffered a stroke and may have permanent brain damage."

Eastsider Balduck wow. we have become so woke and litigious
    .
Read the above............this has nothing to do with 'Woke' what a silly statement.

This is a stroke, and probable brain damage to the mother of young children.

You know this thread illustrates everything I loathe about contemporary culture.....

Even seemingly intelligent people........read a headline, skip the article......and draw a misinformed conclusion that's both wrong and offensive and entirely out of line with the facts.

    Do better people.

If you don't read an entire article, from beginning to end, you should not offer an opinion on its contents.

    ***

Doubtless, the mother ought not have sledded in that particular spot.....

But litigation is normative in this type of case, even in Canada, a much less litigious nation.

Even most middle-income families have no way to deal w/the costs of caring for someone with a serious brain injury for an extended period of time. Normal health insurance [[assuming one has that) should cover the bulk of hospital bills [[though not always).

But the cost of what follows is rarely fully funded, if at all, by insurance.

In an accident involving no other people, the only logical recourse is to go after the city, which is insured, to make sure costs are covered.

That's unfortunate, but a reality in which most people that requisite insurance or savings to deal w/such catastrophes.

Yeah, any reasonable person would have just gotten up and shaken that skull fracture right off.

    Do better.

Just curious, have there been reports of other injuries on "Deadman's Hill" in the recent, or distant, past? Was the run extremely iced over or was the bottom of the hill so slippery that the toboggan couldn't be controlled? Not saying that what happened to this woman is in anyway okay; just wondering if others have been hurt and it's never been noted because a relative hasn't called news media and gotten on TV to talk about it.
