"The children had not attended school since they’d been abandoned."

I would think that alone should have been reason enough for the school to contact CPS so CPS could do welfare checks until they got to the bottom of the situation. It shouldn't have to wait for a landlord to request the welfare check.

Is the school prohibited from calling CPS for some reason?

What a bizarre story. The neighbors didn't notice anything? The landlord never did mandatory inspections? How did it go on so long?

These kids need a mother and a father. The father is not there, and the mother abandoned them to let live a garbage can of a house. That is unethical and wrong! The mother will be charged for this horrible crime.

Were they ever enrolled in local schools?

Good question. They were 12, 13, and 15 years old but that doesn't guarantee they were ever enrolled anywhere. What a nightmare.

3 children left to live alone for years in Oakland County -- what we know

Their mother was arrested and Child Protective Services placed the children in custody of a relative.
A relative that apparently never checked on them?

I keep telling people, mental health is real and is a burgeoning problem.

My guess is mom got a new boyfriend and didn't tell them she had three teenagers and didn't want him to find out. So dropped food once a week and either paid the rent or was getting the rent paid by welfare while she lived with her boyfriend. I do find it weird that a 15 yr old boy wouldn't at least venture outside of the house once in a while just to look around. The girls too. I wonder if "mom" threatened them somehow or if they are all mentally handicapped and afraid to go out. Too many questions

^ Yes, I'm thinking one of those children may have been suffering some mental trauma. I doubt these children were attending school regularly. Beyond their control their hygiene would have been very poor, starting at the level of wearing dirty smelling, unwashed clothes.

Kids, especially teens, are very judgmental and vocal about appearance [especially latest styles], smells, hair, and ESPECIALLY smelling other students long term! Therefore hard for students smelling bad! Also a teacher would have intervened to find out problem.

I was wondering the same thing. Very weird. They didn't even know how to put the garbage out?

Awful news. We are all just speculating here without enough facts but my guess is the children were threatened by the mother that if they went outside for any reason they would be taken away by the state to someplace terrible. Fear can force human beings to live in some pretty bad situations.

Where were other adults besides the mother? You live next to or across the street from this house and you don't notice if people live there? Also, children that age would wander out the house or know how to use a toilet if they weren't mentally challenged or physically handicapped. Why is the media not reporting this? Wouldn't a family member ask the mother about the presence of the children at some point? The story is bizarre, but how the media is covering it is even more bizarre?

3 kids found abandoned in piles of garbage, Michigan mom arrested
The woman accused of abandoning her children in piles of garbage years ago was arrested and is being held at the Oakland County Jail in Pontiac, Michigan. Agree. Can't believe the neighbors didn't realize there were unsupervised kids living in that house. It's not like they were living on a street with no other houses on it.

This is so heartbreaking and mind boggling. After listening to the Sheriff's new conference, I found one big missing question, so let me ask it.

Reports say the children did not go outside, so what happened with the mail? If I didn't empty my mailbox, it would, in a few days, be absolutely stuffed with unsolicited advertising mail.

Why wouldn't/didn't that trigger notice by letter carriers and/or neighbors?

It sure beats the "trailer park" stereotypes, as well. I mean, this row of houses seem like a pretty comfy middle class soccer mom type environment. I’m thinking people have to quit looking at their phones and start checking on their neighbours.

In that case the post office would leave a vacant notice in the box. I recall seeing one of those after I moved out of a place. I'd return occasionally just to watch over the place while it was vacant. That notice informed me that I didn't need to check the mailbox anymore.

I don't think postal carriers are required to initiate any investigation as to why the mail had accumulated. Maybe they should?

^ They'll [the postal workers] probably protest that they already have their hands full [literally].

The reports state that the only time the boy went outside was to get the mail and to touch the grass, so that explains the mail.
