Default Gardner White to return to downtown Detroit with new store concept

This will be a nice addition to downtown.

GW Home is slated to open this spring in a Bedrock property at 1201 Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit. The three-story, 15,000-square-foot store will be located across the street from the Hudson’s Detroit development. GW Home will occupy a space that currently houses Next Level by Rollercade. It was previously home to an Under Armour store that closed in January 2022.
Gardner White CEO Rachel Stewart told Crain’s that the project came together in the last couple of months. “Everything has to come together perfectly for you to pull something like this off and when things align you jump to make them happen,” Stewart said. “Like every Detroiter, we’re incredibly excited to see the success of the city. There’s a growing retail base and that’s really heartwarming to see. It’s time for us to be a part of it. There’s also a ton of residential in the area with plans for more, and not a lot of home furnishing options. With us being the local company, we want to be that option.”The opening would give Warren-based Gardner White its 14th location in Michigan.

What about Next Level black owned arcade and skate bar?

I hope the arcade and roller bar moves somewhere else. That seems like a good fit for downtown.

Certainly good news for downtown retail. It's too bad they weren't taking up a little larger main floor footprint though. There's still a lot of empty space to fill on Woodward.

Looks like it concluded its run last month, according to the Detroit News.

I guess trading on the race of the owner wasn't enough. I walk by daily and it's always empty.

Next Level was a temporary fill for a black entrepreneur to make a quick buck until a great retailer move into that spot. Maybe Sheffield will find another home for the arcade if she become Mayor. The skating rink was too small by rink standards. That was a great move for Gilbert and Bedrock to get Gardner White to open in that spot. That is the same spot that Restoration Hardware was considering until they said that they needed more space or were told that they had to have more space. Downtown need a good reputable furniture store. I can't wait to here about Apple's plans in opening in downtown Detroit as well as the retailers that will open in the Hudson's Block

I really like this idea coming to Woodward. Always thought that that location was prime for visibility and exposure, as well as being attractive on the Woodward retail landscape. Was kind of sad when underarmor left, because of visibility, did not particularly care for its entertainment replacement, looked kind of junky, didn’t look like it was doing very well. Having a store like this, is a great addition to downtown and it’s a great location for exposure. Hopefully they do well

I’m old enough to remember Kresges in that location.
