Stay Cable Installation: The installation of the stay cables for the Gordie Howe International Bridge began in January 2023, marking a significant milestone in the project. The bridge features 216 stay cables, with 108 on each tower. These cables are essential for both delivering the weight of the structure to the towers and maintaining the stability and placement of the bridge deck. Each stay cable consists of metal strands housed in high-density polyethylene [[HDPE) pipes, with the number of strands varying between 38 and 122 per cable, totaling more than 16,000 strands for the entire bridge.
Adjustment Process: After the initial installation, each stay cable undergoes a process where the metal strands inside the HDPE pipe are stressed until they reach full tension. This adjustment is crucial as it accounts for the dynamic loads the bridge will experience from traffic and environmental factors like wind. The tensioning of the cables is an ongoing process throughout the construction of the bridge deck and road deck, with each cable being adjusted uniquely based on its location and the bridge's structural needs. Once all cables are installed and the bridge deck is fully assembled, final adjustments are made to ensure all cables are at the correct tension.
