Coney Island ride…
I once had maself a rat sammich in Penang, Malaysia,
Unfortunately disguised as a hot diggity dawg on rye
Finally ended up regurgitating my big malaise, yeah
Ma stomach felt hitched to a roller coaster at Coney Island, I ain’t gonna lie
It woulda got worse had I not drank a gallon o’ milk o’ magnesia. Ugh!
No canned Detroit chile but you can buy it frozen. National Chile Company. Most grocery storesDetroit purists would condemn it, though.
Can one buy Detroit coney chili sauce in a can? Could be a good way to prepare at home with a Kowalski or Dearborn natural casing dog, mmmmm.
https://www.food.com/recipe/copycat-...t-style-535522 has a recipe for making one's own sauce, but ready in 4hrs 15mins? ain't nobody got time for that. Calls for beef heart as well.
Original coney chile usually had beef heart; and I always cook my Texas Chile for 4-5 hours
I think I’ve eaten at Lafayette more, but I never got into the Lafayette v. American rivalry.
You don’t want to be like Sisyphus pushing that boulder up a hill.
These cities have big rat problems, and there’s one thing to blame
THE CONEY KING
A brief history of Detroit's American and Lafayette Coney Islands
People mistook Coney Dogs for food and the rest is history.
After all the recent consternation about rats, I raised an eyebrow at 2:12 in the above video when it said "Gus adds a homemade meat sauce, a proprietary recipe that is still used today."
Wait. Proprietary meat sauce? Just what kind of meat is in that sauce? Eeeeuww! LOL!![]()

A friend of mine is a flight attendant based out of Charlotte. Whenever he flies into various cities, he likes to give shoutouts to local favorite restaurants. Case in point, whenever he flies into West Virginia, he gives a shoutout to Tudor's Biscuit World [a chain local to WV].
A while back, when he was in town, we went to both American and Lafayette back to back. Turns out he prefers Lafayette, as do I. Whenever he's working a flight to Detroit, during his announcements, he'll give an announcement of "Welcome to Detroit, home of the real-life Ratatouille, Lafayette Coney Island!" keeping in line of his tradition of local restaurant/icon/monument shoutouts. He's not happy Lafayette's closed, and plans to visit when they open back up from this latest round of rat infestation again. He knows the rats are there, he knows they are a problem, he simply doesn't care, because Lafayette being a divey, grimy mess is half of the appeal to him.

I'm not gonna disagree with you on that. The inside looking relatively unchanged since the 1950's wouldn't be a bad thing, if they kept it cleaner, but it's simply been too long to let it go this far. Given THIS recent video about Lafayette's remodelling efforts, it looks like they are cleaning up the place while keeping some of the "retro charm", I just hope it works at actually keeping the place cleaner and rat-free, and the management/employees keep the place clean.

To be fair, "kitchy" doesn't have to be unsanitary. If the food's good I can tolerate or even enjoy the former. The latter though, that's a deal breaker. I've had food poisoning before and will never, ever return to those places, kitchy or not.
I think most restaurants understand that.
^ Yep. A case of food poisoning makes you forever shy about careless food eating; thinking more about safety as to how you cook [proper food washing, prep, and cooking temperatures] and and where you eat!

Now you have to beware of the squeaks. Do they come from the mopping clean linoleum or from Mickey the mouse hiding in that corner…

Cleaned up perhaps, but the old question remains... what's really in those hot dogs?
