Default So Glad the Auto Show is back to its Winter Home

I thought the move to warm seasons was a good idea. It wasn't. The show got lost amid all the summer activities and having venues all over the place.

I'm so glad it's back to the quiet days of winter and all in one place. I look forward to visiting it. Anybody else going?

I'm going because I'll be in Detroit for a Pistons game and it's a way to kill a couple of hours. The move to summer was hoped to combat the decline of auto shows in general, partly due to the lack of vehicle introductions. Hard to get excited about a bunch of suv's, cuv's and pick-ups.

I'm curious if folks are excited about the auto show. Personally, it feels to me like it use to be an exciting thing, but now its just back to a trade show, which may not even be all that necessary, considering modern communication technology. I hope I am wrong and the show has a bright future. What say insiders?

Having the Auto show back in January will be the excellent way to lure more people into this event that almost lost its flare.

I am glad to see the Auto Show back in January. It gives me another excuse to go downtown and hit Mexicantown or Greektown afterwards. We usually go with friends and their families. Even when we are not in the market for a new vehicle, it is good to see how the Big 3 compare to others. Since Detroit is usually quiet around this time of the year, [[except for the Lions), the businesses could really use the boost in customers.

I still think that it would had worked out better in the summer especially inJune. It just wasn't handled well. The last one didn't have the glamor but was more hands on. It had an Autorama vibe to it. The outdoor events weren't well organized. The Motorcity Crawl held in 2021 was better organized and well attended

Is Mercedes, BMW and Audi going to be there?

^ Or Volkswagen? I used to love the Dodge/ Chrysler display with all of the digital wall and floor graphics showcasing their cars.

The Foreign automakers all have very small displays compared to GM, Ford & Stellantis. They are just a few cars displayed by the local dealers. The vehicle displays only take up about half of the main floor. Remember when Cobo needed to be expanded to handle the show?

I remember going to the 1968 Auto Show and Jimi Hendrix was playing next door at Cobo Arena. I said to my buddy “Let go see Jimi instead.” He said “ Nah, we’ll get him next time he comes to town”. One of the biggest mistakes of my life. When he came back in May, 1969, I was in the Army and then he was gone. Rest in peace Jimi. “Excuse me while I kiss the sky”

Thanks for posting that. I also saw that concert. I tell young people now-a-days I saw Hendrix for $6 and they pat me on the head and say "sure you did..."

And it was normal to wait a few weeks to get the stuff you ordered back in the mail.

Most of the names don't even exist any more. Chevrolet could have several different auto bodies on the floor not too far from another bunch at Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Cadillac.

Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler all had multiple styles on display.

I saw Hendrix at the Masonic Temple, Feb 23 1968. I think the tix were $4-5 for near the top of the balcony.

It blows me mind what some of today's concerts charge for tickets. Think of what the scalpers are getting.

So, what were the attendance numbers?

Not a chance they are going to report them. My guess would be about 300-400,000 or roughly half what they were pre-pandemic.

The move to a warmer month was a great idea had it went according to plans in 2020. Covid ruined it. When it was held in the summer of 2022 many foreign car companies didn't participate. The show adapted this hands on theme where show goers were driving on some type of ramp or track displaying the vehicle's durability or performance. The Concourse de Elegance which was to coincide with the auto show was only held two days instead of three . There were no events held around the downtown midtown area nor Belle Isle as originally planned.

We went to the Auto Show on Tuesday morning so that we could check out models that we will consider for a new car purchase this year. Glad to have the opportunity to look at models across companies. But I wasn't impressed much by the show itself. A mere shadow of its former glorious car experience where you could spend hours there.

I went on the final day for a few hours right before it closed. It felt "right-sized" for todays car market where automakes produce maybe one interesting vehicle each. Didn't go on the Bronco or Jeep rides, the lines were both extremely long.

There's just not much to see these days when it comes to cars, bland crossovers and monster luxury pickup trucks. The bright spots for me were the new Fiat 500s, VW Buzz van, and the two concept cars from Chrysler and Cadillac.

Okay, I was wrong when I said there was no chance they would release the attendance number, although at 275,000 I'm not sure why they did. As we said, it's just another small consumer show now with 100,000 less than Toronto drew last yr.

I remember going circa 2002 [[which was right around the time of peak attendance), and it was literally nothing but elbow room as everyone was shuffled around Cobo Hall / Arena conveyor-belt style.

Every brand you could think of [[obscure or otherwise) had big/flashy displays and ambassadors.
